Heat Wrap. Can i expect to notice any difference?

I recently fitted a Hybrid FMIC to my car and noticed a difference in power. I also had a suspicion that the BOV was leaking (still have no boost gauge so cant really tell) so i changed the BOV back to standard and its made a BIG difference the car feels so much stronger...

Since i have a full decat exhaust up pipe, downpipe i was thinking of heatwraping for a bit more power... however i'm unsure of what needs wraping and if i would notice any gains from doing so?

Any help/advice is very much appreciated :)

Cannot believe you have modded the car that much and not fitted a boost gauge...

Well you will probably only notice the reduction in noise in the cabin..

It should speed up the flow of the exhaust gas.. and worth doing but I doubt you will notice the improvement. Will also stop spread of heat to surrounding areas so trying to reduce heat soak..

Wrap uppipe and downpipe.

JGM :)

I wrapped my DP on Saturday - But I still have TMIC, so I'd probably get more benefit than you..... (might improve Air intake temps though...)

Difficult to tell if it made much diff, as I had a remap on Monday :D (Which HAS made a difference !)

I'm wrapping my new H&S Downpipe up tonight in heatwrap, the only reason is cos it's stainless steel and i hate the sound of stainless steel downpipes!... Wrapping it gets rid of the raspy/tinny noise.

Where can you get heat wrap from, and how much would i need to wrap a downpipe??

Why do you want to wrap downpipe?

Would not all useful heat not have ben utilised before downpipe?

Maybe just top part (Exposed to engine compartment)

To cut down on engine bay heat. But not all.( Save the wrap )

Air is just like a fluid. Think of oil, the hotter it gets the easier it flows as it is thinner or less viscous. So wrapping the headers, up-pipe and down-pipe keeps the gas in the pipe hotter and the surrounding areas cooler.
I am not sure if you would notice the actual, ultimate power increase but where you may notice it is in the spool of the turbo which will improve.
A 3" D/P along with an up-pipe will take under a roll and a set of headers can vary but about the same again.
You also need tie wire and a tie wire tool or it becomes tedious. Some people use tie straps. Not cheap.
There is also a V.H.T. spray paint in silver or black to improve the wrap life.
Various suppliers including Nimbus Motorsport, Steve Clark. 01377 236170.
Up to you to decide if it is worth the time and expense.
BTW Wrapping on the car is not a vible proposition to get a lasting job IMHO.

Thanks Harvey,

I've got a VF22, very laggy turbo especially now with FMIC fitted, it doesnt come on song untill around 3-3.5k revs... i think heat wraping will be a good idea to help improve turbo response...

Thanks for all the advice :D

What about wrapping the standard headers that are cast?

harvey 21 February 2004 02:11 PM

According to the experts you should not wrap cast headers. Might be another Scooby myth because it is standard practice with some competition guys and has been for years.
Franko : Please send me your e-mail address and I will get back to you direct on the above and NF. harveysmith1@btopenworld.com
Do it direct as I might not look at the S/Net for days at a time.
