sorry, but this forum is so slow now and i visit less ... just me ?

I have 512k broadband and a pretty quick PC and i find SN a pain to use now ....

- things just take a long time to happen/paint

- pages get "stuck" a lot.

- everthing just feels really clunky, like the "server" is struggling to index it's database and then reformat (that's a guess as i don't know about BB services!)

is it just me or should i just be more patient ?

- mark.

no not just you!

Dream Weaver 16 February 2004 10:33 AM

Strange, no problems for me, its even quicker than it was before. Loads instantly and quicker than some of the less well known forums I use.

no problems for me either aside from a very occasional glitch

Silvafox 16 February 2004 10:51 AM

It seems quicker to me?!

Speed is OK, but a search function would be nice.

I know, I know - still indexing the database .... testing .... , but how much indexing and testing does it need, I reckon NASA projects could be done in less time than this.

Seems  to me

Wasn't Simon/Shaun changing Hardware today ? to further improve the speed

rob27 16 February 2004 11:33 AM

It is slow! I am on a 2x2 meg pipex business connection and it drags!!

sammyh 16 February 2004 11:40 AM

It is being worked on by both Simon and Shaun at the moment, for what its worth its fine for me at the moment.

Obviously depends on a lot of links in the chain between your PC and the SN servers e.g. local network congestion, your ISP, the routers between your ISP and SN host, SN server itself, etc..

On my works 256Kb Leased Line (Demon Internet) it's taking around 10-12 seconds to go from a forum to the main SN bbs screen and around 5 seconds to go from the main screen into a forum. It's even slower going into a post - around 16-18 seconds for the page to display fully (no images or embedded links).

Is it possible (or even financially viable) to provide some sort of load-sharing on the BBS through multiple servers?

Nice and zippy 4 me at work, sub 1 second for any page, but we do have quite a fast connection being a hosting company :) Mind you, not much slower at home on NTL 512 either to be honest

Redkop 16 February 2004 12:01 PM

No problems for me either on 512k. Very rapid.

very slow, and im on broadband

mwp 16 February 2004 08:11 PM

it seems to have got marginally better since i took off "classic SN mode" ... i could be seeing things tho'

ozzy 16 February 2004 08:37 PM

Seems much better this evening (Blueyonder 1Mb). There shouldn't be such a huge difference between a 256K and 1Mb (or even 2Mb) connection since the amount of data is very little when viewing threads (unless they have loads of high-quality images).

much quicker this morning at 7am ... still not as quick as old SN .... so is that all the extra features/data on screen that's slowing it down ? ... when the logins go up the load isn't linear ?

The_Judge 17 February 2004 12:13 PM

Fine at work - 2mb Zen ADSL 20:1

Absolute pants at home - 56kb dial-up (yeah, I know, mint... ;))
