Japanese Import tyres
 

Hello.

I'm looking to buy a WRX off the boat from Japan. I've been warned that the Japanese tyres may not get through the MOT. I mean spec rather than wear of course.

As I understand it, I should be able to tell by looking at them. What do I need to look for? :confused:

Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

Look for a speed rating, the wrx my GF got had tyres with no rating on them. Didnt fail the mot cos the inspector did not notice, all the same we changed them, all 4 and got a good deal on a set of pirreli.

Might be other things as well.

Where is the speed rating? Most car tyres have 195/60/14, just for example. Is the speed rating something to do with these figures. Please don't be afraid to patrnoise me as far as tyres are concerned!

My GF car came with M&S tyres (Mud and snow) no spped rating and dire handling.

We got a good deal at a Form 1 tyre ctr.

Fair play 'To yo' Ian, absolutely and unequivocably what I was after.

I can now rest assured there won't be a hidden £400 or £500 on top the purchase price.

I owe you a virtual pint.

If you get Bridgestone Potenza RE-01s, or Yokohama Advan AD-07s or such (likely with V, Z or Y ratings) and decent tread depth, count yourself lucky IMHO. They are FAQ quality that.well sticky and serous performance tyres. Built for a looong life they ain't though;)

Snow tyres would likely be Q rated, and VERY soft for tarmac. However, on snow and ice (assuming once again, decent tread) they'll be great. If you've no need for that sort of "performance" they'll be AUATOAB though;)
