Dam Minis...
 

Hi,

My mate is doing his nut at the moment over his mini...

It is a 1330GT Lump i think with twin webber dcoe's, etc etc...

He is of late getting the car cut out on him randomly, it does'nt cough and splutter or anything before stall, it just cuts out, or looses power...

It sort of just slowly dies, but then comes back to normal, pressing the right foot down makes no diffrence at all, it's like you've taken the key out while driving...

We have checked the plugs/leads, carbs, jets, fuel pump etc and its all fine...

Any ideas...

does this only happen in old weather? does it restart again after say 30 seconds.

does it only happen at speed?

if so get a fuel additive help stop it.

dont mean to hijack your thread but my fiesta looses power at speed for about 20-30 seconds, then picks up again. However it only does this when im going fast and i let off the accelerater a bit.

Could it be that i need an additive in my fuel?

Yep it does restart after a short while..

Wouldn't happen to have an electronic ignition amp on it?

OK, weird question but:

What does his rev counter do while all this is going on?

The reason I ask is my 1430 Mini used to do this all the time and it turned out to be the battery cable wearing through, shorting out and killing the ignition and then sorting itself out. I only discovered it after smoke started billowing from under the car. The rev counter would go nuts while it was "hiccupping".

sounds like a dicky fuel pump to me!

I reckon it's the ECU ;)

Rev - I had a similar thing, the jack fell across the battery terminals and burnt out the earth strap, lots of smoke. Spent 10 minutes scavenging in gardens/skips for a new earth strap/bit of wire and we were off. Them were the days.

Not sure what the rev counter does to vbe honest, but i think it just stalls at ilde...

Where gonna try a few of the things mentioned here today...

I also had a battery lead 'wear out' on my Mini resulting in exact same probs - worth checking out.

What's full spec? Twin webers on a 1330? Christ. Probably too much fuel ;)

Had this problem on a 1293cc 8-port i used to race, changed everything before we found it was the distributor weights !!
Cut out, leave it a while then it would restart most annoying

i am no mechanic but i had this problem on my old 205 gti and it was some faulty wiring on the fuel pump, well worth checking as it was very annoying and frustrating to see it fixed so easily!!!

I had the same thing on a BMC engine. Does he still have the diaphram fuel pump driven mechanically by the engine? These get scum from the tank come through and after a while under load they reduce the fuel flow. The engine cuts. Then you sit there with the pump running on tick over or the engine off and the scum sinks back down the pipe and the engine goes again. Check the fuel supply and clean the pump out. The pump should be on the side of the block with a cover plate held down by about 6 capheads. Replace gasket and away you go.

To summarise this thread: it's either the electrics, the fuel or the ignition ;)

Or maybe it's mechanical? :D
