sidelights "changing the bulb"

how the hell do you change the sidelight bulbs??

ozzy 12 February 2004 02:26 PM

Assuming it's a classic .....

Open the bonnet and undo the little screw holding the sidelight lamp.

Firmly, but carefully pull the sidelight lamp towards the front of the car. Or, get behind it and push it forward. It's held tighly in-pace by a plastic ball & socket joint. You need to be forcefull, but take care not to break the plastic ball joint.

Once the lamps off, you can access the bulb holder - it just twists off and you can pull the old bulb straight out.

For some unkown reason, the nearside is a lot easier to remove than the offside.

Well bizarre that, changed the nearside no probs and nearly snapped the plastic joint trying to force the offside out!

Also I have PIAA LED sidelights fitted which look well

WagonRich 12 February 2004 08:07 PM

My nearside was a pain to get off, while the offside wasn't even on properly :) Looks loads better with decent (white) sidelight bulbs to match the headlights.

What do the led ones look like?

Not a very good picture, these are the white version. When my headlights are on(PIAA Platinum White) they actually look blue in colour and not as bright :P

I got PIAA Side light bulbs and they are fantastic. I am now considering buying the HID headlight conversion so the lamps match with the side lights

RS Grant 19 February 2004 11:23 AM

How much is that conversion SUBTYPER??

Just to clear this up... (I'm a little slow...) You have to remove the whole sidelight unit, rather than just pinging out the bulb from the engine bay side as you normally can do in other cars??

It does look a wee bit cramped in there, so it does make sense!! :)

Cheers,
Grant

SUBTYPER 19 February 2004 01:01 PM

Hey mate.

Yes you got to remove the lamp unit to get to the side light bulb. Unless you got very very small fingers. (LOL)

Last time I checked on HID units they include H4 bulbs and all ballast and wirting and stuff and came in at £360.00 +VAT was going to try and organise a group buy, but thought maybe no interest.

markwild 19 February 2004 01:04 PM

yes - the whole sidelamp comes out - the bulb is held in the plastic lens, not in the bodywork and so comes out with it. The difficult part is pulling the lens off the car, as it clips to the headlamp with a small ball, which fits into a clip section on the outside of the headlamp unit. I'm afraid that the descriptions above are about as good as you'll get without pictures ! Just undo the screw that can be seen in the top of the headlamp (once the bonnet is up) and pull the sidelamp unit forwards.

GOOD LUCK !

Mark

PS _ I bought the HIDs at that price - They replace the H4 bulbs and come with all necessary bits. - I'm currently upgrading my website, but will include some pics when I have....

SUBTYPER 19 February 2004 09:36 PM

Hi Mark do the HIDs make much difference to the night time vision is it a worth while conversion mate.

ozzy 19 February 2004 11:56 PM

There was a thread recently about the HID's.

There is a kit available for the Impreza that allows the fitment of HID lamps to the existing headlamp. I think it's around £450-£500, but the difference is very good.

Those with the fitted commented that the dipped beam is very bright, but the main beam doesn't add that much more light. Seems that dipped is so good, most people don't bother even using main beam.

The 360+ vat kit is a standard replacement for 'classic' imprezas - i.e H4 bulbs (twin filament). The dip beam is almost as good as the old main beam, so you can appreciate how good it is. However, the main beam is basically the same light, but guided slightly differently, so its not all projected down. This means that the familiar 'extra brightness' is lost - and its a bit weird. I've replaced the fogs with PIAA driving lights to supplement the main beam and I've no complaints now !

I'll get some pics over the weekend and add them to the website - I'll drop a link onto here once I'm done !
