My diff, its diff, oh help

can some one shed some light on this for me please

i own a my98 its been developing a whuring noise from the back i was told it was the onside rear brakes. (worryied but okay)

so at the week end i change both disc and pads on both sides and its still there (very worryied now)

the noise builds with speed and is still there when the clutch is disingaged

if it is the diff what options do i have

thanks

I'd make sure it's not a wheelbearing first........

My mates scoob had this,it turned out it was indeed a whining diff.

IIRC he drained the oil out of it and replaced it.It made no diff difference ;)

I think he put an additive in it and it did make it quiet :)

Methinks its just putting off the inevitable tho...it needs replacing sooner or later.Rather than sell it on while its quiet then let some other poor git get saddled with it.I`d bite the bullet and replace it.

Not that im a mechanic or owt,so i`d ask a pro to diagnose b4 shelling out on a new/replacement/used diff.

Hope this helps

diff

first off put the car on a ramp or on axle stands. all 4 wheels off the ground get a assisant to put the car in 2nd or 3rd to create the noise at that speed. use a long screwdriver and put it to the hub the other end to your ear check both sides. if the noise is one side that's the wheel bearing if there is no noise it's tyres the rear if the noise is at both sides but hardly any noise at the diff itself it's both bearings . tops
