300 Smackers for a small dent repair in boot lid....

heres the story....

The other week in all that snow and ice (we got it quite bad here due to lack of road salting) i came off the road at 20mph going down hill when squeezed off the road by van in the ice that couldnt drive up the hill... :(

unfortunately i went into ditch... couldnt stop... AWD was great going up hill but not much help going down... with two wheels sliding onto the ditch.... :(

and worse there was a focus already there taking up the parking space where i wanted to put the scoob! :(

subsequently after much screaming and yelling... after dragging myself out of the car its now in the garage getting repaired (£3.5k insurance job! for a new bonnet, offside wing and lights, valance and grill! luckily no engine, suspension or steering damage... i would post pics but cant get to photobucket due internet restrictions at work) bang goes 8 years no claims and a £500/year insurance premium
the van didnt stop either!:(

after two weeks i have now stopped crying and not feeling too depressed about the whole thing
(the GF was very good to me trying to cheer me up) I am now eagerly waiting to get it back (i have a WRX bugeye). ETA next friday (20th).... cant wait!!!!
its amazing how three weeks of driving around in a m reg ford escort 1.4L can make you really appreciate 200+ bhp .... i was getting bored with the lack of power!!!

anyway to get to the point....

there is a tiny dent, about the size of a finger nail, in the boot lid... dont know how it got there as it was there when i bought it.

so i thought ... i know wonder if they can do that for me as well, whilst they have the car and paint already in the shop! how much???

£303

the bloke started by going on that i would need new badges etc... and they would have to take the spoiler off etc....

i reckon they just didnt want to do it!

i already have £400 excess so getting that done is not gonna happen now...

anyway... to those peeps that know more....

does that sound reasonable...???

or it possible to get a small repair done on a local area...??? and it needs a paint touch up as the paint was removed when dinked!

Surely a ent specialist can sort that out!
If not, how close are you to Scooby Clinic?

Ray_li 11 February 2004 06:16 PM

dont dent masters do dents for about £60

Wuss 11 February 2004 06:24 PM

LittleKnocks ;)

If you are anywhere near them! If not, it still may be worth the trip depending on how much they can save you!!

It's very hard to advise you without seeing it, but I'd like a pound for every time I've heard 'while the paints in the gun can you.....'

When I was estimating I would have probably gone for 8 hours labour, £200, and probably £30 for paint as it would be mixed anyway. (+VAT)

dents

bloody hell m8 i thought my price was bad from chips away £175 + vat to sort out a small dent in my door - dent masters are sorting it out on saturday for half that - chips away are robbing monkeys heads also there customer service is the worst i have ever spoken to bloody Amateurs

£300 for a small dent is a joke i bet a ned boot is only £500 ish LOL

oh well this is my 100th post he he he he he he god im sad

If I remember right the dents away lot only undertake repairs where the paint is intact, if it has flaked off as you imply then the whole bootlid would need to be done, although bodyshops up this way usually charge about £100 per panel plus VAT,

cheers guys

yes the paint has been chipped off... so it does look like its the whole panel that needs doing...
i thought that might be the case... :(

i know of cheaper and better quality garages...
unfortunately this one is the insurance approved garage!
and i was too depressed to even think about all the messing about involved in getting an alternative garage to do the work... just wanted it back

so i bet they dont want to mess about with any little cash in hand jobs...
i did think it was steep

not only that but £3.5k for resprayed wing, bonnet. valance
and new grill and lights seemed a little high to me as well!

anyway thanks again
and im gonna look about for an alternative.... or just leave it until i have more money....

For £120. and he rubbed it down and re-sprayed as he couldn't get the tools in to push the dents out and was also concerned with there being 3 together the distortion would be a problem. And "while the paint was in the gun" he touched up some chips on my front bumber as well.

Done by Prime Finish in Notts, as used by TSL! Gimme a shout if you want the number

Tez_H 12 February 2004 10:49 AM

cheers olly

ill look them up as well....

im pretty sure it can be sorted without going to the extent of debadging and removing the spoiler etc...

im not a total fanatic about the finish... so long as it would pass a slightly less than detailed inspection. at the momet it sticks out like a sore thumb! ;)
i wouldnt hide anything when trying to sell anyway :)

it looks like you got a fair job done on yours...

Yeah - cracking - well impressed with it. Can see some very slight distortion still where the wing meets the bonnet, but hardly noticable, and the paint match is spot on, and the work is guarenteed for life as well.
