205 GTI 1.9

I am sure this has most probably been discussed here before. I am thinking of picking one of these up for the wife to knock around town in. Does anyone have any tips on what to look out for, especially given how old they now are (Iread somewhere that they qualify for classic insurance).

Any tips/views welcomed.

Cheers

Tang

Depends on the insurance co!

Theres been loads of 205 threads on here, or for advice pop over to http://forum.205gtidrivers.com and theres a few buyers guide's on the main site of http://www.205gtidrivers.com.

Don't wanna burst your bubble, but if you are thinking of giving the wife one ;) then bear in mind that one-nines are not the best car in town, thanks to heavy steering, drivetrain shunt and razor sharp throttle response. 1.9 GTi's are uncompromisingly set up for the lanes, which is why they are so bloody good at it.

Or is the wifey thing a ploy? So if she decides that she doesn't like it, then you will be forced to keep an example the best hot hatch ever made for yourself? ;)

.....and then drop an mi16 in it :D

met 11 February 2004 09:55 PM

ive been commuting mine to the station now for the past couple of months & its all back lanes around hertfordshire & that is really where the car belongs, with no pas, razor sharp throttle, heavy clutch, did i mention no pas, lumpy idling,(pug gti trait) i would strongly NOT recommend one for the missus, unless you get a facelift later one with pas, & even then they are not very comprimising, hard suspension & clattery french interior, great car dont get me wrong but a b itch to drive in traffic, fo sure! lot of fun & more fun to thrash than my tek3'd wrx round the backroads
oh buy mint its for sale in the cars for sale thread !

ive got mine on limited miles classic policy so i keep the ncd on the wrx & the pug costs me £177 fully comp with euro breakdown bargain

You could get an Mi16 converted one like mine with PAS.

Much easier to drive round town than a normal 1.9, no shunt, no lumpy idle just smooth driving, then bloody quick at higher revs.

ps met, whats wrong with PAS  The 205 PAS is one of the best ever.

and...where did you get your insurance for £177 - mines due in April, so could do with a cheaper policy.

Just re-read my own post.

Forgotten about the fact that both of my 1.9's I have owned were purchased from women.

My first (with PAS) had been owned by the lady for 9 years & 19k miles. Spoke to her husband the other day, her new replacement Audi S3 has sat unloved on the drive since.

My current (non PAS) 1.9 was bought from a good friend, she had the car 5 years. Sobbed like a baby when it went, and still pesters me for a go now and again. Her replacement new MX5 lasted only months, again unloved. She is tiny, but never complained about the non PAS steering.

Simon

Not sure yet. Cant make Saturday as the missus would kill me.

Would like to come Tuesday, but work commitments at the moment mean I might not make it down yet. What time will you be there on tuesday? I may just pop down in the afternoon.

All depends how much work I get done tommorow/Sunday/Monday.

Could do with someone having a look at mine though - need some informed opinions on engine troubles (blue smoke), and I know a few of the 205 lads are going, Blackscooby, C_W et al.
