Forum FAQ, links, contacts, dos and donts - please read!
This sticky thread will serve to provide a list of frequently asked questions and their answers for the Insurance forum.
It'll also provide a non-exhaustive list of insurers who are known to insure Subaru Imprezas of one sort or another. Please post contact details of insurers on this thread. I will collate them and put them into a single post, deleting the newly-redundant posts as I collate (if that's OK with everyone) Please post your FAQs and insurers on this thread. Cheers, Nick. Insurers Phone Mods? Imports? Website ---- Q: What is "No Claims Bonus" and why should I protect it? No Claims Bonus is a percentage discount off a policy that you accrue through driving without making a claim on insurance (except glass claims). Even 1 year's NCB can be worth a significant discount, with most companies providing maximum NCBs of between 60% and 80%. Once you have had so many years NCB, you can optionally protect your NCB entitlement. This normally costs extra, but means that you can make a certain number of claims and still retain the same NCB entitlement. Q: I have Protected NCB but my policy has shot up after a claim - what happened? Your no claims bonus will have been 75% or so if you have maximum NCB. After a claim, you may be classified as a worse risk and hence your premium will go up. You still get 75% off the premium, but the initial premium is higher hence your quotation is higher. (Just imagine what it would be if you hadn't protected NCB) Q: How does an endorsement (speeding etc) affect my insurance Most insurers are not greatly concerned by up to two SP30 offences. Beyond that, or for other offences such as jumping red lights or drink driving, insurers will see you as a worse risk and will load your premium. Q: Should I declare my mods or chance it? A: Insurance cover can be voided if you fail to disclose all the facts about you or your car. It really isn't worth the saving as if you write your car off then that saving really isn't a saving. Besides, it is a criminal offence (gaining goods or services through deception) Q: Why does someone who's personal details look fairly similar to mine get a much better deal with Company X? Insurance looks at many factors: you, your driving history, where the car will be, what the car will be used for, what the car is, etc, and decides how much risk you present in order to calculate a premium. Even a different postcode can make a huge difference. So, what's good for one member of this BBS may be absolutely awful for other members. |

L&V -
If you are under 30 and have an MY01+ i.e. Bugeye or later they WILL NOT insure you!! For some reason MY00- i.e. classic UK cars are OK under 30! Why, I don't know... I'm still with Tesco but at £650 for myself and my wife at 28 with full NCD on a UK MY02 is pretty good... Cheers Jim Tesco - require Tracker, http://www.tescofinance.com/personal/finance/, Tesco Motor Insurance Cote Lane Leeds LS28 5ZX Customer Service Contact Number 0845 300 4400 |
Just got my renewal notice from Tesco this morning....
28 years old 4 years NCB MY99 UKTurbo No tracker required £562.80... HAPPY WITH THAT!!! :) L&V could only do £760 |
L&V will not insure anyone under 30 on a car higher than group 17.
All classics (up to MY00) are group 17. All new shape (MY01+) are group 19. This is why L&V will not quote under 30s on new shapes, but will insure under 30s on old shapes. Cheers, Nick. |

Privilege seem the cheapest at the moment:
27, Full NCD, + Wife, Protected NCD, 0 Voluntary Excess, kept on driveway, no mods, tracker fitted, incl business mileage, fully comp - £723.45 Much cheaper than Tesco who were the closest @ £900+ Everyone else wanted £1000+ :eek2: |
L&V sometimes cause confusion for people on here because the web pages only apply to unmodified UK cars, with a disclaimer to that effect.
But don't despair, 'cos if you ring them you get a completely different story, mods are ok and some imports are ok. (Actually you can get a different story each time you ring them, so don't give up straight away !) Age restrictions apply, but don't be put off by what it says on the Web pages... |
I only found out that Churchill now cover imports when I read www.insurancechecker.co.uk I was a bit dubious to start with cos their site might have been wrong, but i clicked on the link, and it was more than happy to quote me on my babeeeeeeeeeee :-) 10% online discount makes a decent difference when my last year's cover was £1900 fully comp.

OK just to clarify about L&V, just got my renenwal, asked them about mods, they said the ONLY mods allowed now to new or existing customers is
1. A tow bar 2. A sunroof and that is it, I now have to find alternative insurance as they sent the renawal but upon phoning them they declined my renewal :( andy |

You may all know this, but I got caught out so I shall post this info anyway.
Not all insurers have the same sot of policy, and some are obviously a lot worse than others in the amount of cover they will provide you. It appears that the Admiral group and Tescos (this includes elephant.co.uk) have added a nasty little clause in their insurance quotes that bit me quite badly. If in the unfortunately event that your car is deemed a write off, regardless of fault, they will cancel your policy from the date that they deem your car is a write off. They will offer no refund for the remaining period of your policy, and this loss is not recoverable through any of the "uninsured loss recovery services" that are available these days. This means that if you have just paid £1200 for a year’s policy and have the car written off in the first month you have just lost £1100. The next unfortunate effect of having your policy cancelled is that you are no longer insured 3rd party on other cars. So now, not only have you had your pride and joy written off, lost the remaining value of your policy, but you are now no longer insured to take any replacement vehicles out for a test drive. There is also no form of insurance that you can buy that will cover you for a test drive (trust me I tried) The final effect is that you have had a policy cancelled by your insurance company, and you have to tell other insurers this. Some of them take a very dim view of this, although most realise that it was not your fault that this happened. Like I say, I have just been the victim of this when some fool pulled out in front of me and wrote my car off. Every insurer that I have called I have asked about this situation to see where they stand. The good news is that 80-90% of the companies out their do things properly and do not cancel your policy. The ones that do are the Admiral group (including elephant) and Tescos. There may be others, so please post if you find one. Please look into this before purchasing cover to see whether you think the risk of above is worth any discount in premium these companies may be offering you. It turns out that Privilege is cheapest for me anyway. |
Just called adrian flux got a great quote for my my97 wagon, with full exhaust system, fmic, air filter, wheels, dump valve & strut braces. fully comp protected with my fiancee named £700.73. A quick answer...if thats possible???
I am about to get another Subaru...it will (I think) be an 03 2003 WRX UK model with PPP.
I am 44...clean record...NCB of 20 yrs...married....wife with same record. Where should I try for my insurance...I called Tesco today..they had NO IDEA of what PPP is. Its probably been covered already but I am just getting back into this family. Thanks. |

New car sorted...
I was not happy paying around £250 extra insurance because a car has PPP...I have also decided not to renew with Tesco because of their insistance on the vehicle having Tracker or similar.
I have bought an 02 WRX and gone with A Plan...£489 inc. wife & protection. Russ. |
