Just done an ecu reset last night, and WOW, it really makes a differance.
Around town it's a lot smoother and a bit quicker, but the engine seems to be quieter aswell.

I looked right dodgy doing it though, in the carpark at merry hill, windows down, door open and me half-out the car, under the steering wheel pulling out leads http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

What MY? Just wondering whether it is worth doing on a MY99, as i'd heard somewhere (well, it must have been here!) that they are different to previous MYs.

dowser 31 August 2001 06:57 AM

I do it every month or so - my00 http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif

Surely doing it too often makes you go blind? http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/cool.gif ?

nah, seriously - I thought when doing a reset the engine basically suffers knock/detonation, the ECU learns from its mistakes and resets itself to cope.

Surely doing this too often would be harmful to the poor fragile ikkle motor?

DJB 31 August 2001 09:48 AM

The ECU reset is really only worthwhile in pre-MY99 cars. These ECUs take a long time to advance the ignition timing if the timing has previuosly been retarded by, for example, poor quality fuel or other det inducing factors. I think the benefits are even greater in pre-MY97 models.

Models after and including MY99 re-adjust quickly and I believe MY01 adjusts almost immediately.

I've got a MY99 and I had to put 95 fuel in an emergency ('caus the car would go no further!)

After bunging in a few tanks of optimax, I didn't think that it was running as well as it had before. It was really noisy and not at all smooth. Did the reset, and it made a noticable differance. It pulls a lot cleaner, and more powerfull from 4000-5000 rpm, it's smoother and a bit quieter as well.

I used these instructions:

john banks 31 August 2001 01:20 PM

Just reset my MY00 PPP - since it was installed it now has an induction kit and a different restrictor. Don't know whether it has made any difference. I think once the DP goes on and Optimax goes in I will reset again, but otherwise, can't see the point on MY99+ unless there is a problem or a bad tank of fuel or a new mod.

Potential muppet question - is the check engien light meant to stop flashing or do you just drive around for a few minutes and assume it's done?

john banks 31 August 2001 02:38 PM

I just did the latter. Maybe I'm a muppet!

In fact I'm a double posting flood controlling idiot muppet.

All,

Where would my ECU be located on a MY00. Filled her up with SUL last night and want to see if there is any difference.

Many thanks, Phill C

Mike Tuckwood 01 September 2001 01:30 PM

It's underneath the passenger foot rest area.

Pull the carpet back, there's a metal plate with 4 bolts (or maybe 3), and one at the very top. Take that off, the ECU will be there.

Mike. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif

Mike Tuckwood,

Cheers to you mate, I'll try it in a minute.

Thanks.

babber 01 September 2001 03:24 PM

Just had a look at the ecu and I can't see any obvious connectors to short http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

Anyone got a picture that could help ?

Cheers Phill C

Disco 01 September 2001 03:47 PM

The actual connectors described are under the steering column

babber 01 September 2001 03:50 PM

Disco,

Just had a look and there are bloody loads, any help would be appreciated mate. HELP!!!

Cheers Phill C

Disco 01 September 2001 03:53 PM

What MY is your car, I'm just nipping outside to look at mine and see if I can give you any pointers.

mutant_matt 01 September 2001 04:04 PM

Babber - I just posted the info you need in your other ECU thread

Disco 01 September 2001 04:08 PM

Ruddy Hell!!!!!

I had planned to do mine also this afternoon and new that the wires were black (2) and green (2) and thought it would be easy.Had a quick look to help you out Phil and there are millions!!!! I understand from the link above that they could be taped up but again there are a dozen like that. Anyone got an idea where the connectors come from, or will it be trial and error unwrapping the taped ones?

babber 01 September 2001 04:11 PM

Found them now....Quite obvious really just look carefully.

Two black multiconnectors and two green one!!

MY00, got it in January, well here goes.

Hope it works http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

My mate is here with his MY97 Wagon, but I can't find his connectors. Any help ?

Cheers Phill C

Disco 01 September 2001 04:35 PM

Phil, did the connectors have fairly insignificant looking wires pertruding from them???

The green connectors I found very high up within area behind the column! MY94 same phase as MY97

babber 01 September 2001 05:15 PM

Disco,

Sounds like the ones to me mate, hard to reach!!

Think the black connectors have a red and a black wire, and the green ones, I'm not sure. One green connector is male, the other green connector is female. Same with the black.

Once you've looked you can't really go wrong.

Just driven it and it has made a hell of a difference. So fast now!!!!

Tilt the drivers seat back and climb under the dash upside down. Neighbours might think you've lost the plot.

Hope this helps, Cheers Phill C

Disco 01 September 2001 05:32 PM

Yeah, reset mine too now thx Phil!!!

Off to see what effect it has made!!!

NBW 01 September 2001 06:15 PM

It's easier just to disconnect the battery for a bit. Worked fine on my '00 after an hour or so.

Best leave a steering wheel lock or similar on though!!!!

PS Did make an instant difference when I switched from 95 to 97 RON plus Millers Octane Plus. Not sure how many tankfuls the ECU would take to adapt on it's own.

babber 02 September 2001 03:33 PM

Disco,

Did it make much difference to the performance on your car.

Mine feels much faster than it did before and tends to pull a lot harder.

I wouldn't like the idea of disconnecting the battery and having the alarm going off for an hour, while I'm running around stressed out, and pissed off neighbours. That's the reason for having the connectors surely.

Anyway, I think it's well worth doing.

Cheers to you.

Disco 02 September 2001 03:47 PM

I've only done about 50 miles so far but it does feel a little more responsive. I'm about to remove my dump valve and replace it with the original recirc one (I forgot to do it yesterday! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif). Once I've done that I'm gonna have another go and do a few more miles as I understand it takes a few for the ECU fully relearn the optimum parameters etc.

FamousCoops 02 September 2001 10:57 PM

I cant find the bloody connectors on MY94 legacy turbo am i blind ,nearly broke my back and neck looking for them where are they ? ? ? ?

krankyd 03 September 2001 05:28 PM

as per the faq, they are underneath the steering colum pod. Mine weren't taped together, I just pulled all the leads about till they fell out http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

Pritty easy to spot, 2 sets of leads that look like they should plug together. Have a dig about and you should find them.

NBW 03 September 2001 06:47 PM

Disconnecting the battery doesn't mean the alarm will go off.... but when you reconnect it, be ready with the remote....
