So........ Vauxhall Monaro?

"The new Vauxhall Monaro will be available from the Spring of 2004 powered by a 5.7 litre V8 engine developing 328hp and 347lbs/ft of torque."
http://vauxhall.co.uk/futureModels/monaro.jhtml

Now - I remember this being on Top Gear, but I'm sure it was less power and cheaper. I like it, but its gonna be a depreciation disaster. £28,500 is a lot of dosh, aren't these sort of things about 10p in Australia?
Hang on, I'm off to holden.com.au to build a car

what would scooby do 10 February 2004 08:49 AM

1) It's a vauxhall
2) It looks like a Ford Probe
3) will accelerate to 60mph in just over six seconds :(

Mind you with a chevy V8 at least it should sound cracking (unless poxhall have mucked that up to)

:D

what would scooby do 10 February 2004 08:58 AM

Oh and the base model is £25k in Oz :D

Dracoro 10 February 2004 10:23 AM

IMO, they MUST market this as a Holden. Is so, it will be quite successful. If they market it as a Vauxhall, it will fail (depreciation wise at least).

Personally I really like them, saw a few when in NZ and they do look nice.

Hang on! sell them as a Vauxhall, they'll depreciate really badly and I can pick one up dirt cheap in a few years! Bargain! ;) :D :D

workshy_fopp 11 February 2004 11:02 PM

Drac - I agree it should be badged Holden (and Vauxhall should call themselves Opel) Looked on the Oz Holden site.
http://www.holden.com.au/www-holden/...?modelid=12001

The equivalent is surprisingly expensive at $60k Aussie so about 24k sterling. So it's not that big a difference. Still looks like a yellow Calibra tho.

RON 11 February 2004 11:13 PM

They're only bringing in 300!!!

And I want one to modify for big bhp, but ain't got no cash!

Damn!

Bluie 12 February 2004 08:37 AM

Seems like a big secret trying to get any info out of Vauxhall direct, however froma source I have should be a great car.

Forget the badge can always debadge/replace do not forget the Lotus Calton.

2 MODELS: CV8 and VXR

Only 300 units a year! (250 CV8/50 VXR)

CV8: £28500

VXR: £35250

MPG: Roughly 25.

Top speed: 150+

BHP of CV8: 320 (0 TO 60 in 6.9)

BHP of VXR: 360 (0 TO 60 in 5.5)

Equipment: Traction control
18” Alloys
Cruise Control
Trip computer
10 Disc CD player/10 speakers @ 260 watt
8 way electric seats/full leather trim
ECC
Full security system

VXR adds: Big bore exhaust/quick shift
Performance braking system
19” wheels.
Full body kit

I'd have to say I'm very tempted by the VXR unless it looks a pig in the flesh.

Seems a lot of car for the money.

Cheers

Nick

I'm tempted too, has anyone had a test drive ?

STi Paul 18 April 2004 11:24 AM

Saw one yesterday, Holden HSV, private plate, so it might have been a earlier import,
still very nice, and sounded good too. Not Scooby good, but still OK

I've been looking at bringing over a second hand commador SS from Oz (think Omega/4 door monaro)

To buy 2nd hand for a commador SS was looking at around £12K :D

Still yet to research the cost of getting it over, and the duty/tax etc.

Obviously add HSV bodykit and ship some "bolt on" engine upgrades from the USA (corvette LS3 engine remember) and bingo - a very cheap HSV

If we gonna get bitchy on badges well consider the options for V8 muscle cars:

MG ZT 260 from £28500 to £33500 OTR

Or BMW 540 Sport, Merc CLK500, TVR, Porsche = £Megabucks (I would say M5 or 645 and CLK55 AMG but they cost even more).

I know what I'd rather go for (in terms of brand new cars)

carl 18 April 2004 12:04 PM

I'm hoping that a lot of Commodore GTS owners will swap to the Monaro, and the second hand market will be full of cheaper Commodores. Then I'll probably swap the TVR for one.

NotoriousREV 18 April 2004 12:21 PM

Immense tuning potential. A supercharger kit running about 6psi could boost the MG 260 up to 330bhp and you get full boost just off idle. Costs about £2500 and it comes with:

complete with a one-piece cast aluminum manifold, air to water intercooler, mechanical water pump, Eaton M90S-ported supercharger, integral bypass valve, fuel pump voltage booster, 30 lb/hr fuel injectors, billet fuel rails, custom chip, and all brackets, belts, hoses and hardware for an OEM quality installation.

There was a 510bhp HSV GTS on Autotrader a few weeks ago for £19,995

sti-04!! 18 April 2004 06:08 PM

but on another note the MG V8, looks miles better & could be a big seller very quickly
