connecting DVD to surround sound

We are having problems with this connection.

When we connect the DVD player direct to the TV, only images and music are playing, no speach sound.

When we connect the DVD player through the surround sound, there is no image no music and no speach.......

And we don't see a reason why the DVD shoudn't be working properly, it is second hand but bought from a very good friend of mine .......

Any ideas?

Thanks
Kate

How are you connecting to the TV? Via SCART? If not try a SCART lead.

On the surrond sound, start with just trying to get 1 speaker working, make sure the volume is up. I assume the DVD does have an integrated amp? If not, you probably won't get much out of it

Yes we are connecting it via SCART.

I don't know if the DVD player has integrated amp., but we are connecting the surround sound amp to the DVD. .....I think....... ;)

OK

Check the TV, it may well have multiple AV inputs. I know mine has 3 Scart sockets. Your TV may not pick the right thing so try cycling through with the remote - usually an "AV" button to see if things get better.

Also check the audio output you have selected on the DVD you are playing, you could have somehow selected the music only rather than the full english track.

OK so you are going to an amp. How are you connecting the DVD to it? Optical, red/white Phono cables? If optical make sure the connecion is in properly, it can be finikey. Make sure you have the amp set to the right source, if you are using an optical connection and the amp supports DVD and CD and is set to CD it may be looking for a Phono connection and not optical! Also, I know this sounds obvious, but make sure you go from "OUT" on the DVD to "IN" on the amp (been there done that :D )

I had this problem on my dvd player and amp

in the dvd player config menu there should be a section which allowes you to change the format of the outpu sound, you should change these settings hopefull one of them will be correct.

I had to change mine so it output RAW sound.

Not sure if this is going to help ou but it is what I did to mine to get it to work with my Yamaha DSP amp.

also make sure the amp is not set to DTS or something stupid set it to auto of you can.

Cheers

Steve

The DVD is going through an optical cable from the amp. If it is connected to the PS2, the dvds ar playing normaly.

We will try your other suggestions.

Thanks.

Sounds like something on the DVD player itself then. Check the cable is in properly and check the output formats / options as mentioned by Wurzel.

Connect to the TV with a fully wired scart, but in the DVD player set-up menu select the scart output to be stereo only, and rgb for the video output. If your DVD player is outputting 5.1 through the scart, then the speach will be missing as your TV has no centre dialogue speaker. On the digital output (preferably coax, not optical) make sure it's set to 5.1 output. If your amp has an auto setting, use it. Then when you select DD/DTS or even stereo, the amp will switch to the correct format itself.
