If anyone from here IS tempted I would advise extreme caution. Shadow II's are easy to bodge and a nightmare to get right once someone has mucked them up.

For starters I would want to know a lot more about the history and in particular service and repair history of these two cars. Please remember also that not all independant Rolls-Royce specialists are reputable - also the difference in value of a car with a full Main Agent history and a 'specialist' history is thousands of pounds, and a car serviced at any old garage is worth less again.

There are miles and I mean literally miles of wire behind a Shadow II dashboard + relays and all sorts of other troublesome things.

Another thing, Shadows did not come with as much kit as you might expect, for instance if you look closely at the newer of these two cars, it has no front headrests. These were believe it or not an optional extra! (As were a nearside door mirror which neither of these cars has.) So this car was either ordered to be chauffeur driven or is what we used to call slightly tongue in cheek 'Poverty Spec', however it does have a leather knee roll on the dash which the older car appears not to have.

Finally the older car is a little odd, it is listed as being 1977 and is on an R plate, yet it has headlamp wash wipe - which is significant as this signifies what I can best describe as a car that is Shadow II 1/2 (which was not introduced until 1978). Yet it doesn't have the front fog lamps which it should have, but it does have illuminated side markers which again signify an older car. I would want to know a lot more about this car to explain these anomalies - it could be a 'cross-over' car but you would want to be VERY sure and while I have seen genuine late Shadows with a Spirit spec engine, for instance, I have never come accross this before.

I would of course emphasise that all this is opinion based on the photos and details given in the listing.

As you may have gathered I used to sell these for a living so I know a little about them (I do something COMPLETELY different now). I live in Northamptonshire so if any Scoobynetter is tempted to look at these I would be happy to accompany you so long as you buy me a beer on the way home!

I take it the advert was an RR shadow II

a little story:

My dad (whilst pissed - quite normal) Bought a Rolls Royce Silver Spirit from a bloke in a pub (the model that suceeded the shadow). For...wait for it £5000!!

Cheap as chips. I was dragged along to pick it up, there it was, to the untrained (my dad's) eye it looked mint. But to me it didn't look right, it wasn't anything specific, just a number of little things. Mainly bad body repairs. My dad thought it was'nt that old (came with private plate), until I lifted the bonnet...2 SU carbs, I said walk away walk away. As dad's do...he ignored me.

Still, one new battery (it had been standing in a garage) and off it went. 120K miles, and ran perfectly. I had to drive the thing, and it drove well. Everything worked except the A/C. It was only until we took it to my uncle's garage and got it on the ramp that we found how bad it was. Put it this way....to get it through it's next MOT (it had new (dodgy) MOT when we bought it) would cost at least £4K to put right.

Mainly suspension, steering, shocks (hydraulic remember), brakes, gearbox mountings, sills, floorpan...parts are a fortune. Plus it had been crashed big style from the evidance of repair to the chassis. Still it looked ok, and drove in a straight line! My dad went rather quiet when he had the fault list (and I gave him a "told you so" smirk) But generally it was generally safe to drive, just it would never pass an MOT

But here's when things become daft...we used it for 11months 'till the MOT almost ran out, as a daily driver, no problems.

It would hapily blast up the motorway. And I used it to go on the pull a few times :D It looked great from a distance, and there was nothing better than getting the "gentleman" treatment when you rolled up at some fancy doo. Must admit it grew on me :) Especially the sight of a 22 year old in a Roller(trade insurance :p)

So what happened to it? we Sold it to a dealer!! for...guess....£5000!!!

...That's banger motoring in style!! :D

Although the dealer was none too happy when he did a HPI after buying it...it was a CAT C write off and was declared scrap :eek: Still, he wasn't too fussed afterwards as he managed to remove the "scrapped" from HPI and sold it on without making a loss...plus he used it for a month himself too! :)

so what's the moral of the story?? Not sure really .....Suppose it's a gamble, it could cost you, it may not - do you feel lucky? well, do ya?

Far to much white on the page its hard on the eyes, especially late at night.

Can something be done about it please, post it pale yellow would be OK

On a 19” monitor its burning my retinas out M8
