ICE Forum Purpose and FAQ - read before posting
With the advent of the new software, it's a lot easier to make sticky threads. Over the next week or so, this thread will have forum guidelines, FAQs and useful links posted in it.
So yes, after two years of originally saying that a sticky thread was a good idea, we've got the means of having one :) Please post useful links etc on this thread, and I'll prune and then lock for posterity once we're all happy with the contents. |
A couple of ideas?
Looks like I'm the first to reply then...
Might as well stick a link to your site on the sticky as it seems to come up a lot :D (assuming you're too modest to mention it ;)) Would it be a good idea to have a table / list of what size speakers fits where on classics, bugeyes and blobeyes? e.g. front, rear, tweeter, parcel shelf, boot etc. It could be laid out so there's standard replacement size, minor mods fitting and major shoe-horning / chopping about job ;) size options... Wot no more info?
Did anyone see that tumbleweed blow across? ;)
It's gone a bit quiet and we can't even do a BTTT :D Any more info for the ICE virgins amongst us (does that mean we're frigid? :D) |

ICE - That's the way I did it :)
Ice upgrade
Take it a stage at a time. when you are at your local Subaru dealer buy a Forester pocket part number 66128SA000. about £15.00 See my post for a picture. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?t=324366 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Buy an MP3 player Sony, Pioneer, Alpine are all good I went for the Sony CDXF7700 (Reference #2751) Sony CD Tuner Price: £224.99 http://homepage.ntlworld.com/paul.la...-CDX-F7700.jpg http://www.mcs-direct.co.uk/acatalog/Sony_CD_Tuner.html http://homepage.ntlworld.com/paul.lapworth/ice/10.JPG See my posts: http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?t=341819 Get a unit with a Sub out, so that you can adjust the sub volume later on when fitted Buy a Subaru - ISO connector lead (Autoleads Part # PC2-44-4) http://www.mcs-direct.co.uk/cgi-bin/...ml%23a443#a443 Price: £9.95 Or http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/defa...th=292_315_580 That’s all the bits for a head unit swap and will give you a 50% improvement. All it takes is 2 screws to pop the drinks holder out and pop the front panel out with yer fingers easy, 6 screws hold the unit in, then you just unplug the block connector and stick the adaptor between your new unit and the car cable, only other things to unplug are the Arial and earth. The head unit is bolted in through the existing fixings and you have to trim the sides of the pocket holder and screw to fit, nothing difficult there Some more handy link on how to do ICE In yer Scooby................. http://forum.wrx.com.au/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=215 http://forum.wrx.com.au/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=7283 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Phase 2 General consensus of opinion here is don’t bother replacing the Rear door speakers. Front door Speakers I went into Halfrauds and listened to the speakers on the wall, some cheaper. Infinity was the best, so I fitted the 6000CS as per the GaryCat work through. They were easy to fit and the collar made of MDF was easy to make, because its so soft, you will need a jigsaw to do it. ************************************************** *** Right, get some 12mm MDF 12” X 24” and draw a vertical cross at 6” from the edge and then across the centre line Mark the diameter, that lets the main body of the new speaker throught + a bit, find an old tin the same size if you have not got a compass. Drill some hole to let your jigsaw through and whip both the large inside holes out first, with the block of MDF in on piece. Lay yer new speakers into the hole you have cut out and mark the fixings for your new speakers.. Lay your old speakers over the hole you have cut out, using the marked holes to align, and draw around them and mark the fixings for clearance holes to let the new longer fixing screws through, that will be used to screw into the plastic fixings in the door. Now its time to jig saw to the outer marked line. Doing it this way you get the big chunk of wood to work with before you cut it up. File it up and clean, MDF is soft and so easy to work with. Piece of cake. ************************************************** ******* Don’t forget to sound deaden the door skins, and also note the MDF collar is on the outer side of the plastic sheet when you fit it to the door. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/paul.lapworth/ice/12.JPG http://homepage.ntlworld.com/paul.lapworth/ice/13.JPG http://homepage.ntlworld.com/paul.lapworth/ice/14.JPG http://homepage.ntlworld.com/paul.lapworth/ice/15.JPG http://homepage.ntlworld.com/paul.lapworth/ice/16.JPG The tweeter was replaced and the cross over fitted, but I hear some people just wrap it in bubble wrap and tape it to the inside of the door Two rolls of sound insulation is a benefit, and worth doing to the front door skins http://caraudiosecurity.com/catalog/...p+cPath+48_221 £14.99 per roll ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Phase 3 Re sub: its top notch, took a couple of Chavs out for a spin and they did not ask me to turn it up, LOL No problem installing, stuck a piece of 12mm MDF onto the boot with No Nails and screwed it down, Lined the boot with two more rolls of sound deadening. http://caraudiosecurity.com/catalog/...p+cPath+48_221 £14.99 per roll Wires easy, power from the battery and Phonos to the head unit, using the amp switch wire to trigger the amp when you turn the head unit on. All the wires came with the BassLink kit from http://caraudiosecurity.com/catalog/...oducts_id+1538 £144.99 http://homepage.ntlworld.com/paul.lapworth/ice/04.JPG http://homepage.ntlworld.com/paul.lapworth/ice/05.JPG http://homepage.ntlworld.com/paul.lapworth/ice/09.JPG Ajax |

Seems that nobody on planet earth has an STi V5 head unit wiring guide, so I had to work them out myself (ISO plug had been cut off leaving a loom of bare wires!)
Wires are as below: Earth - Black with silver stripes Ariel - White with silver stripes Illumiation - Purple Switched live ignition - Yellow / Green Memory - Blue / Red Speakers Rear Right - Blue / Yellow & White / Red Rear Left - Orange & White / Red Front Right - Red / Yellow with silvewr stripes & Black / White with silver stripes Front Left - Green & Brown / White I had a few wires left over as the loom has 16 wires and the Kenwood only requires 16. Remaining were 1) Illumination 12v Purple / Silver 2) Black / Silver (possible earth?) 3) Black Silver (possible earth?) Also a very thick wire which I have no idea what it was but will investigate :) MB |
looks good ajax! handy links too! ;)

Chrome: Thanks for the comments, tried to keep it simple, I don’t do difficult if I can help it.
Still pleased with it, and quite satisfied. Money well spent. Ajax, Paul |

Guide: The rear speakers on a MY96 are 6" coaxials however JBL GTO626 have adapter plates that allow you to covert up to 6.5" coaxials. I'll re-edit this once I have worked out how to secure the speaker surrounds in as you will not beable to use the OEM speaker covers.

I come across a lot of posts with people complaining about poor radio reception.
The Scoob has the antenna linked to the rear windscreen. Behind the left hand pillar covering in the rear you will find the antenna amplifier. This needs power. The factory fit unit supplies this as standard. So, make sure you connect power to it. How do you do this? Connect up the electric antenna connection on your headunit to the blue wire on an ISO adapter. This is the same wire that you would connect a turn on feed for a remote amplifier to power a sub or sorts. When the headunit is turned on, power is fed to the antenna amplifier and bobs your uncle great radio reception. |

For those of you who manage to break the door handle surrounds when you remove you front door cards, fear not they are quite cheap.
