A mate's MY 99 UK Turbo (which I could be buying in a few months time) has the habit of blowing a little blue smoke out of the exhaust when started, this is worse the longer the car has not been started (ie several days). Looking through the search facility, this seems to have occurred to several people on this site.

Does anyone have any experience of this happening to them? Also does anyone know what is likely to be causing this (valve stems??) and how it costs to fix?

Sitting would mean more oil could seep through the valve stem oil seals?

Valve stem oil seals tend to smoke all the time if they are worn, rather than just start up.

I would check oil level to see if it is too high first as this causes oil to be blown through the breathers into the intercooler and inlet manifold creating blue smoke at start up as it collates.

yer i had this a while ago, although it stopped, the car had been sitting for ages and i had a little puff on start up. no loss of power etc. apparently its normal for scoobs to smoke a bit on start up cos of the design.

Plus the oil breathers go straight to the turbo! So could just be a little oil there! Doesn't take a lot of oil for a lot of smoke!

I'm sure you can get treatment for this??

Blue smoke at start is most likley valve stem seals, easy check is to do a run down from high engine speed in gear and see if you get a puff when you then reopen the throttle, if you do its the seals, only fix is new ones!

Overfilling a scoob is a killer due to the flat engine design.
