As in my virus thread:

XP Home, 2 GHz, 256 MB RAM.

My son has 36 000 temporary internet files, built up over the last 2 years, the computer can't even handle deleting them!! I want to delete them so the virus checker doesn't get bogged down.

How come the wife's files all stored in tidy subdirectories of Content IE5 with odd names like SYXCUPRWW, but mine and his just built up un-sorted??? At least I could delete hers easily, 1 sub-directory at a time.

Can anyone
a) help with a solution for these - split them up, free up ?memory or processor speed, delete entire sub-dir (tried, didn't like it) - and

b) tell me how to change settings so it doesn't happen again?

I assume a solution is easy in DOS, but I'm crap at DOS.

If u can get into the temp directory- delete the files in blocks not all at once. have u tried Disk Clean up in My computer- properties?

To remedy the prob afterwards, just set your task scheduler to do a daily disk clean up- this will kill off most files but leaves the temp cookies.

I can get in - it takes 110 seconds to build the file list, I timed it - but even if I highlight 20 and hit "delete", the poor PC takes 60 seconds to delete them *if I'm lucky*. More likely, it grinds to a halt and I get "Windows Explorer Not Responding".

Any other tips? I'll try the disk clean up tonight, but the PC still has the blasted blaster virus around, and many applications refuse to work, so it might only be useful for the future. The idea is to delete these files BEFORE running the AV remember, so the AV doesn't get hung up on them...

In Internet Explorer

Click Tools > Internet Options and click Delete File on the Temporary Internet Files box. Go make a coffee and have a biscuit.

Once that's done, click the Settings button and reduce the size of the IE cache down. A new PC with a decent size hard disk means it will have defaulted to something silly - I never set it to more than 25 or 50MB.

You may need to increase the file size on the temp folder
As this would cause IE to crash or not respond

Have you updated IE at all should be version 6 with the SP1 patch afaik
