Just started appearing ?

Is this really the only way S'net can fund the B/W needed ?

I just spotted these too - I thought it was something to do with the Google toolbar I have installed, and I was about to remove it for that very reason. Is anyone else seeing them?

Hanslow 22 January 2004 10:02 AM

Yep :(

Aaarrrrgh! One sneaked in on here!

Bravo2zero_sps 22 January 2004 10:03 AM

I have just seen them and they have been inserted into middle of threads. One was never there before a post I made yesterday but is now

Where have they come from and is SN under attack from some unreputable browser?

suprabeast 22 January 2004 10:03 AM

yep i've just noticed it funnily enough... usually 3rd post down i think!!!!

dsmith 22 January 2004 10:03 AM

Looks like every thread page gets one.

Nimbus 22 January 2004 10:05 AM

What's is going on...??

dsmith 22 January 2004 10:06 AM

Ah well I'm sure it will fund all the promised enhancements. might even allow a few more "far sale" forums. or maybe a decent search. or maybe so the BBS s/w doesnt fall over every few days. Prob be announced in the S'Net news cd ;)

See here http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/threa...hreadid=294240

Bravo2zero_sps 22 January 2004 10:07 AM

Is this some sort of worm/virus thats got into the SN servers?

Just checking the code on the ads to try and see how its posting on the bbs

AndyC_772 22 January 2004 10:07 AM

There's an announcement from Simon in the General forum - apparently they're supposed to be relevant to the thread in which they're posted. Quite how ads for credit cards are relevant to any thread on SN is beyond me, though :(

akshay67 22 January 2004 10:07 AM

If they're gonna do it, might as well have some interesting links - e.g. cars or porn. At least that way the hit count from Scoobynet will be really high.

Hanslow 22 January 2004 10:08 AM

So, what are we gonna call this then when it takes over from SIAL from all the questions about it :D

Bravo2zero_sps 22 January 2004 10:09 AM

 Its legitimate! I can't see this being a popular move. I know SN needs advertising but this is dragging the bottom of the barrel using google ads IMHO :(

BOB.T 22 January 2004 10:13 AM

RUBBISH, get rid of em!!!!

Paulo P 22 January 2004 10:16 AM

I just noticed this too :( I don't like it personally :(

Funkii Munkii 22 January 2004 10:18 AM

Lose them, total rubbish this is a BBS FFS!!!

Mice_Elf 22 January 2004 10:19 AM

Nope, me neither. It's an appalling move just to gain revenue.

All the adverts are American based and completely irrelevant.

Mick 22 January 2004 10:27 AM

I've just seen them too. I clicked on the options to comment link and made a comment that I want them off the bbs!

Mice what is the Hosts thingamyjig?

Mick :D

tiggers 22 January 2004 10:29 AM

Just another step in the continuing eroding of standards on this BBS.

tiggers.

DavidBrown 22 January 2004 10:31 AM

The way that it works is that once the page with Google ads have been viewed, Google sends a "bot" over to scan the page and serve up what it considers relevant ads.. Until Google has visited (anywhere between 1 minute and 1 hour) it'll serve default (and largely irrelevant) ads.

I think it spoils the appearance of the site, and makes reading harder (as your eye scans down the posts), but we may get used to them, and it may provide Scoobynet with a decent revenue stream.

fatherpierre 22 January 2004 10:37 AM

It'll be pop-ups next........

And that'll mean finding a new bbs, AFAIK.

tiggers 22 January 2004 10:39 AM

fatherpierre,

Agreeing with you hurts, but you are so right ;)

Regards,

tiggers.

fatherpierre 22 January 2004 10:42 AM

You're eventually seeing the light ;).

unclebuck 22 January 2004 10:45 AM

Serioiusly cheesey. Hope they're not here to stay.

UB:(

TelBoy 22 January 2004 10:47 AM

Personally i reckon after a few days/weeks we'll all just be ignoring them, as per certain people's posts (;)).

damian666 22 January 2004 10:48 AM

I won't be seeing them, re MiceElf's post.

Bandwidth theft.

Damian

STi wanna Subaru 22 January 2004 10:50 AM

I wonder if Telboy will post on this subject?

GaryK 22 January 2004 10:51 AM

How can they be relevant when every f**king one Ive seen is for B.A.S.T.A.R.D credit cards!!!!

Theyve been on here for mere minutes and everyone is pi$$ed off already!

Gary

TelBoy 22 January 2004 10:53 AM
