Was thinking of getting a plasma tv as i saw a reasonable deal quite recently.

Although i've been told by one of my friends to buy an LCD tv instead due to the fact that plasmas burn out after 10,000 hours... is this true?

Does anyone else have any opinions with regard to the lcd vs. plasma? cos i always thought buying an LCD was the cheaper option??

LCD's of plasma tv size (42"+) are more expensive at the moment. Give it a few years and I would have thought LCDs will be reasonable.

I have also been considering a plasma but have heard horror stories of images burning onto the screen creating ghost images for ever more.

I've decided to go for a projector - ok so the quality of picture will be miles off plasma/lcd and crt I will get an 80" 'screen' :D

You could give it a few years, but then you'd never buy anything.. as there's always something better/cheaper coming.

Get yourself a nice 42" they've come down hugely recently, and the modern ones have proper contrast, no fans, and decent resolution.

The video and tv tests refer to how long the tv takes to reduce to 50% brightness ie 10000 hours divided by however many hours you watch it per day so quite a while. Bear in mind also that plasma usually start off with a lot higher brightness than a crt. I dont know about lcd, but done quite a lot of research into plasma.

This was one of THE plasmas of last year, and at this price is a total bargain. I'd have it like a shot, but I've spentt all my money :(

Others worthy are the Panasonic and Pioneer. The Pioneer has just been superceded by the 434, but you only need to go that route if you need HDMI video.

I bought a hitachi plasma 8 months ago and would highly reccomend it... Paid about 2900 i think but without tuner or speakers..

All the stuff with burn in and so on is true but only if you leave it with the same static image for a long time.

Haven't had any prob's with mine... touch wood.. and by the time LCD's are cheaper in a few years i'll of had plenty of use out of mine to warrant getting a nice new one..!!! :D

Panasonic qoute a 25,000 hour lifespan until brightness is reduced 50%.

Assuming you watch it for 6 hours a day, that is almost 11 and a half years, by which time you'll probably be looking for the latest thing anyway!.

BTW, a normal CRT television also suffers from burn-in and brightness reduction.
