Now that I have an rca under my back seat crying out for the .1 of my 5.1 to produce some real sound, does anyone know of anything such as described in the title exists?

I would rather have a hard hitting quality sub which i can easily (read 10 secs) take out for those times when I need my boot.

I do not know of any "quality" active subs, but that's more my ignorance than anything.

Easiest way to do this is to have the power cables on flying leads, using a battery connector as that'll take the current that could be drawn by any active sub setup, or even by a decent sub and amp strapped together...

Get one that's the right volume for the specific sub you have in mind, that's all...

Stick with sealed (hey, talk about preaching to the converted) as that'll work well in most cases and the volume isn't as critical as with ported.

I have never bought an off the shelf box for a car before, they have always been custom made, so with that in mind, is there a make which people know to produce good results in a classic which is well built and reasonably priced.

I prefer an 8 inch sub, or possibly a 10. Fast moving hard hitting (sealed of course).

Hard hitting is something like a 10 with around 500 - 700w rms in it..

two - four 12" subs is my choice..

Two 12" subs with an amp on the back and a proper battery connector as used on fork trucks.. with rca leads.. and held with mini ratchet straps is removable in less than 10.. but unfortunatley also by thieving scum

I do like the Diamond M6s. A single 10 with a decent amp strapped to it will kick nicely. Mr W hit the nail on the head with forklift battery connectors - that's just what I was thinking of, and will carry what is known technically as a ****load of current.

How about genesis 6x9s under the parcel shelf? Some good bass output from those with no loss of bootspace... See JockyTT's thread.

Active subs

Are these any good. They're from the internet arm of my local car audio place.....(they stock the Genesis subs..;))

I've ordered stuff from Incarexpress loads of times with no problems to report - including a few years back an Infinity Active sub. Pretty good it was too, although you wont be winning any spl competitions with one it still sounds pretty good. Obviously upgrades have come and gone since.... :D

clearly you are lacking experience. Hard hitting subs come from a high 1 factor not high amplitude, ie it is not about how much air you can move as to how controlled you can crate a pressure peak.

For this you need a very high current sub fed with plenty of power into a high efficiency box with a low mass cone.

The lowest mass sub cones I can think of come by way of 8s, not 10s, 12s, 15s or larger, these are about making loud noises, not about feeling like you have been punched.

The best sub combination I ever had was 4 jbl gt8 in a straight line in a sealed enclosure.

And preferably a treated paper cone since these tend to be light.

Before you discount them, they are designed as subs rather than all things to all men, and work exceptionally well. They are, in my eyes, currently unique.

Speak to the gurus at audio images and see what they think of them?
