Maybe a silly question but, has anyone managed to change their speedo and rev dials from the old style <98 to the version 5 style 99> ?

So just to clarify...I have the old style interior with dark dials and no airbags and am wondering if it is possible to fit a set of post 98 (white) clocks?

Can I take it then that this IS a stupid question and although the chassis seems identical (to me at least) from 97 to 2000 models, there MUST be different fixings inside the cockpit around the dashboard area and by NO WAY can a later version interior fit inside an earlier car???

Not so much chassis fixings, but you'd probably have to swap the rest of the dash, along with the wiring looms and do a bit of re-wiring to mate the new looms to your original looms at the points where they meet.

I don't know anything about this specific swap, but having done a Mk1 - Mk2 Mondeo dash swap, which are physically exactly the same size and very similar display, that I had to do some rewiring even for such a simple swap.

Sometimes I get the impression car manufacturers go out of their way to change mounts/wiring etc to make this kind of "upgrade" difficult - seemingly meaningless changes to wiring/mounts always appear between model years. So make sure you have a good check of what wires etc are different before starting!

AFAIK, early models use cable driven speedos, and later models don't.

So if you "upgraded" your new dash won't record km's correctly...there is some other stuff too, but your best bet is to get some replacement dials if you just want white dials... :D

I looked into this mate, from what i got told the guage pod is a slightly different shape so wouldnt fit.

he wanted to upgrade the pre 96 classic dials to the 96-00 spec ones. They are no different from 96-00 dials so still wouldnt fit pre96 cars

But he says that he has a 97 tyrpe-R???

ah sorry mate didnt read that. 96 was the transition year, so he should be able to swap them over

Yep...they are the ones I want (the white ones), so these fit in the GC8 classic? Anyone got them?

I thought 98 was the transition year? That was the year that all the other interior parts changed, such as the centre "glovebox" thing etc.

98 WAS a new interior year, but I have a 97 car!!!

I would like the dials/clocks from a 98 to put in my 97 if they'll go!
