I may have to change my steering rack fairly soon and wanted to know how big a job it is. The replacement rack will come with the pipes to the actual pump and the track rods etc so it will be an old one out new one in job (obviously know i have to have the tracking done afterwards).

Plus it's a MY97 rack into a MY93 if that matters (have the later pump reservoir already).

Tony,

We did this to mine when the engine went bout 2 years back
97 rack into 93 car. At the same time though we fitted an sti4 engine so maybe slightly different when retaining the 93 block.
From memory there was an issue with the power steering hoses being a different length or the connectors were the wrong way or something. Ended up buying the hoses from the later car to sort that out ;)

Cheers Pete, i'd heard about the hoses too which is why the rack will come with all the pipes etc tight back to the pump :D .

How is the rack hold in place and how does it connect to teh actual steering column?

The link is about changing steering rack bushes, but the photos may help you out a bit.
