Parts for Impreza are hard to come by in this cold little country... But: I can get my hands on a REMUS exhaust (back box only) and a K&N filter. My questions:

1. Will I notice any differnce?
2. Will I hear any differnce?
3. I haven't seen the Remus exhaust - does it look OK?

The Remus backbox definitely breathes better than the OE exhaust. It is also quieter than standard.

With backbox only, not at all noisy inside the car, only a bit deeper note, and far better http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif sound outside, without being too intrusive. Have dumped the middle cat as well, and still not worried about the noise. That's why I chose Remus in the first place.

If you change your backbox and go for a K&N panel filter, you will notice a difference in pick-up and it will run easier all the way to the redline. If you fit a panel filter, remove the resonator as well (don't know if it's same arrangement on MY96 - mine's MY00.) More pics of the small pipe I made in place of the restrictive resonator:
