Have had 98 Turbo since new, Piston slap occurred at 52k, piston 4 replaced about 2k ago. Since then car has smoked on start up. Serviced since but has been smoking all the time. Car was towed to garage as it had horrendous knocking noise. Transpires that the gudgeon-pin on no.4 had become dislodged and starting to wear at casing.

Would the problem with the pin cause the smoking?

Also what sort of cost is involved with a short block engine as I've been told this is what is needed.

there is no way in the world that the clip holding the gudgeon pin in can become dislodged it sounds like it was never put back in after they replaced no.4 piston. and you are still in warranty so there should be no cost at all to you.

You should not have to pay for any of this but for your info a new UK short block is £1200. This is the price my dealer gets them for.
He also has two on his shelves now. They are engines that have been removed from piston slap cars and the fitter has put new pistons in and stored them just for emergency use.

Garage has yet to confirm,but feel that if they put in a small block, I'd have a virtually new engine which used to smoke before. They feel my current one is partly worn, I not sure as I believe smoking started with the new piston would this be possible? Garage said that it needed time to bed in. I'd also complained about a rattle noise at the service similar to piston slap again
They may ask me to pay towards small block hence the question how much?

If the gudgeon pin is displaced, it would hit the cylinder wall and score it. Consequently oil will get past the rings, hence a smokey exhaust. Seems like a straightforward mistake on the rebuild. I would take it back to the dealer who did the rebuild and tell him to fix it. Short engines are expensive, and bore wear on that sort of scale is usually fatal.
