Have read a bit of discussion latley on painting or spraying the exhaust wrap on your downpipe and headers with something so it does not soak stuff up so much.

So what i want to know is what you guys out there recommend to cover the exhuast wrap with? Would like to get this right first time to minimise removing the downpipe too much.

I used VHT ( very high temperature ) paint spray from Halfords, about £4 a can, some left too!

You can use heat resistant refective metal tape. It comes in various widths on 20-30 metre roles it is made of metal foil with a sticky back there is a paper layer that you peel off to reveal the sticky back we use it in work to apply very high temp trace heating to pipe work on a industrial plant .I have lagged my down pipe with lagging and then wrapped several layers of the metal tape around it making it waterproof.It does smell a bit for the first two weeks that is the glue on the back of the tape but it is fine now .it has dramatically dropped the engine area temps . you can just about touch the downpipe now after a long run also the tape covering makes everything water proof and it does not start to peel off after time .As it warms up it dries out and goes hard .hope this helps .

Have seen this tape before, have seen some of the insides of pro audio stuff covered in the stuff used as a rf screen.
Any idea where i can get some from, short of half inching it off a building site?

yeah please post more info re: heat tape! :)

I will find out on monday where we buy it from and how much it is .I can strongly recommend it , it reflects the heat back into the pipe and keeps it water proof . I doubt it will be very expensive . Will post on monday for anyone that is interested.

I got mine from a place called Agriemach (think that is spelt right:)) they have a website so do a search, I paid about £8 including delivery they do a few different colours. They also sell exhaust wrap.

Just been to halfords and their VHT paint says it's rated up to 500 degreesC. But right next to it was some hammerite barbecue paint that was rated up to 600 degrees C and u got 500ml for the same price as the VHT which was only 300ml. So i got the barbecue paint and am gonna try it on my new centre section see if that helps keep it nice and tidy, still interested in the reflective tape for the downpipe though.

Think the reflective tape is for wrapping things you don;t want heat to soak into.Not for retaining heat
I.E.For wrapping Intercooler pipework, sump or any other heatshields.

Tho you could use it for waterproofing I suppose.
UHT spray acts as a good sealant/proofing and is a lot cheaper/easier to apply.

Wrapping your stainless headers and downpipes is a good idea but you can carry it too far. Some heat needs to get out - by sealing it all in you are quite likely to overheat the stainless to a point where it will degrade and fail.

As the tape is Aluminium and reflective it will keep heat in if wrapped around a pipe but if put around the bottom of intercooler it will reflect heat away all it does is stop heat passing through.We buy it from Tyco Thermal Control 0800 169 6812 it comes in 50mm or 65mm or other sizes by 50m rolls .Someone in work also said B&Q sell it it is used in the putting together of conservatories .
