no. its just part of the sidewall that sticks out more so it protects your wheel more

I tore chunks out of my gsd3 rim protectors. about 5mm deep in places.

how safe do you think the tyres will remain afterwards as it looks like there is plenty of meat left.

Forget Toyos as crap in wet.
Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3s are available at Rapid Fit, Wokingham, Berks, 01189 770 350 for £85 per corner all up. Great deal. They even checked the tracking etc. These tyres are quoted at £100 each on tyres.co.uk, then you need to get them fitted. Ask for Andy and say Ted sent you. Good luck.
