I have a laptop with an infra red port and a sony ericsson t610 mobile, is there any way to link these two to access the internet?

Yes.

If your phone came with software for the PC, it will probably include software to add your phone as a modem.

To dial up to the internet using your phone, you must create the connection and specify your phone as the modem to use.

On testing this a while ago, i was getting faster speeds than a 56k line.

Just watch the costs!

I have one of those Sony/Ericsson phones, think it might be the 610. Anyhow, it comes with a CD with software and you can tell your laptop to use the phone as a modem. Some laptops ship with the IR port disabled in the BIOS and so you have to turn it on. You also have to go into the "connect" menu on the phone and turn the IR port on the phone on.

Once you set up an internet connection to used the phone it is dead simple, sit the phone beside the laptop, wait until the laptop detects the phone ( a few seconds) and then double click on the internet connection configured to use the phone as it's modem.

Thanks for your replies people, got that working just fine! Does calling an 0845 number from an orange mobile cost a lot more when using it as a modem or are the charges still local rate?

Orange use different tarrifs depending on what speed you are connected at. Best thing to do is give them a ring and they will tell you how much its costing.

Don't forget, unless you've got GPRS you'll be whizzing along at a breath-taking 9.6k!! ;) It is possible to browse at this speed tho!

And if you do have GPRS you'll pay for the amount of data transferred, not time spent connected.

Last time I got stuck on the M25 I got my laptop out grabbed my phone and was browsing Scoobynet :)

As V5 said, it is slow 9.6 but GRPS is worth considering. Check with your provider how much it is per mb.

Are you on vodaphone?

Vodaphone do a little gprs dongle / plug type thing, which you slot straight into your laptop with your sim card in it (or a clone) and it's suppose to be as fast as dial up. Like a little attena, not sure if they actually sell them yet or if they're still in development, have a look on their website..
