Ive just fitted a complete scoobysport system and to get the heatsheild on u have to cut it.My question is does it have to be put back on and what is its purpose,and my engine still squeaks when idling and i have checked all the drivebelts etc nothing obvious any ideas

Cheers Andy i just dont fancy putting it back on if i dont have to because it was a b*****d to get off the downpipe fitting was a nightmare but the mid and backbox was a doddle

I have also recently changed complete exhaust system and the exhuast fitters left the heatshields off as they didn't have the required holes on the downpipe.

Told me to monitor the heat under the bonnet particularly brake fluid.

Are these heat shields a neccessity?

Yes, the heatshield is a necessity, or else Subaru wouldn't have spent the money on fitting one in the first place......

Around this area you have the intercooler, boost control pipework, plug leads, MAP sensor line, electrical wiring, brake fluid reservoir and throttle cable. Ideally they should not be getting all that heat from the unshielded turbo which can be red hot after a thrash.

mine was hanging off for a while on one side and gave a nasty rattling sound, took it off and noticed significant heat increases under bonnet, my advice is.. DONT LEAVE IT OFF. If they fitted it as standard, and lets face it, this aint no ford mondeo, it must be necessary.... :D

once its been cut you can remove it again cum mot time with out removing the intercooler

If u r running a TMIC then yes its best 2 replace it, if u r running a FMIC then it doesnt matter. Mine has been off for the last couple of months and haven`t had any probs (I`m using an FMIC though) ;)

I ran a heatshield-less decat on a MY00 for a year with no problems.

Removed my heatshield 18 myts ago when changing the downpipe.No problems at all,did lag the pipe with exhaust swabbing first!!

Just had my car serviced @ Carstins (Subaru, Coventry..£540!!!) and I told them that the heatshields have just been taken off and whether this would cause any problems. They informed me that it is not a necessary part and that it should be okay.

Haven't noticed any negative effects even after hard driving and motorway miles.

Confused. The heatshields are a bugger to put back on so therefore will only do it if somebody has suffered any adverse effects on their scoob.

Anybody had any problems?

I left mine off (I had to- it was in several jagged edged bits) after fitting a Scoobsport D/P to my MY01. Spoke to pete at the time- he told us that sometimes they replaced them- sometime they didn't. I have fitted a new one recently (that we made from bright shiny stainless) as I have been having been experiencing brake fade and heat was prime suspect.

I know people who have run no heat sheild for over a year with no problems at all, I just think if you can easily fit it why not for a start you only need half the bolts that the original uses so just replace the ones that are easy to get to I havnt had any problems with vibrating or resonating.

I have also just fitted a SS DP and am a bit apprehensive about cutting the heatshield to bits if I decide I ever want to put the old DP back on to sell the car - with mangled heatshield.

My question is - "will it help cool that side of the engine down if you remove the blanking plate behind the driver side front grill and swap the grills round ? Has anybody tried this ? and does it have any effect on performance/noise ??

Fitted an exhaust from the cat back today (not downpipe) does it matter about the heat sheild that goes around the mid section not being on.... Most of the heat sheild went around the middle box but i no longer have that so surely it wont absorb much heat as the exhaust gases pass through the new straight through pipe..

Any thoughts...
