OK, I've searched the site for info on this and found some interesting comments, and have looked at the SIDC faq.

General concensus is that tyres need to be either 205/45 or 215/40 to fit a classic impreza.

Would fitting 205/40/17 create a huge problem? Reason for asking is that I've been looking at a wheel/tyre package (Diablos + Toyo Proxies) but the tyres are the 205/40 size. I don;t want to spend money on something that is not going to work, but at the same time don;t want to discount this package if the only problem is a slight variation on the calibration of the speedo.

Is anyone out there running 205/40's on 17" rims at the moment? If so, have you noticed any problems?

The rolling radius will be smaller so your speedo will be slightly out, also gearing will be affected. Toyo do tyres in 215/40/17 - I'd be tempted to go for the correct size even if it costs a bit more.

Hello Mate

iwas running 205/40/17 on 17inch rims

Apart from looking stretched onto rims, i found handling a bit wierd

Since Ive gone to 215/40/17 on 7x17 rims, they look far better, protect the rim better and handling has greatly inproved, albiet I did go from falkens se512's to goodyear f1's. Fantastic!!

Cheers Rob, thats just the sort of info needed - will be getting 215/40's I think, have to try and see who'll do the best deal on them!!

steve, what make of tyre is it you are using?

Just used http://classic2.alfisti.net/english/...eifendaten.htm to calculate the differences between my current tyre (205/50/16) with the following three possibilities (215/40/17 and 205/40/17 and 205/45/17)

against my original tyre size :
215/40/17 results in a -1.2km/h difference at 62km/h (1.92 mph)
205/40/17 results in a -2.6km/h difference at 62km/h (4.16 mph)
205/45/17 results in a 0.8km/h difference at 62km/h (1.28 mph)

This suggests that to keep as close a rolling radius as possible to my current tyres I need a 205/45/17.....

Gah, decisions decisions.
