Hello,

Could people post pictures of any standard or thereabouts renault 5gt turbos. I have always wanted one of these little beasts but have yet to find one in good enough condition to consider.

I have visted some of the owners sites but the best one, I forget the url, is membership access only site.

Experiences and ownership tales would be great!

How do they compaire to hot hatches of there time? eg 205 1.9 gti, Uno Turbos etc...

i had acouple of gt's & they are pretty underpowered in std form in my opinion, the body is very flimsy, the brakes are poor somone told me they are the same as found on standard 1.4 ren 5's
that said i do like them but have to say in terms of parts & tuning & reliability go for a 1.9 gti stronger re-sale too.

I have had or have driven most other hot hatches, the renault being the one I havent hence my interest in them.

I had a renault 5 gt turbo about 8 years ago- had a uk scooby,evo 7,993 turbo since. The R5 is still the car I considered the most fun - very quick - especially in 3rd gear. I had my tuned up to around 160bhp - felt very very quick. It lasted 10k miles and then the engine set on fire in a petrol station - very sad end. I been looking for a good one for a few months - quite fancy one as a track day car - would humble quite a few cars inclusive of uk scoobys.

I've had 2 of them now, and they are great fun!

Probably selling it in the next couple of months though as I don't have the time, money or space for it anymore. :(

I had the R5's as weekend/play cars and they are bascially a hobby, but it's time to move on. A new house and a new Clio Cup mean that my retro 80's fun machine has to find a new home.

Underpowered ?, 120 bhp in a 1970s, 700 kilo shopping car, are you mad ?

It's a 1990 H-Reg, with 88k miles on the clock.

Flew through it's MOT last Thursday, and has just had 6 months tax on, so I've been driving it around for the last few days! ;)

This things can be made fast for little money.

went out the other night with a friend in his import scooby and his friends r5 would pull on him in basically all gears.

He hasnt spent much on the r5 its that they weigh about as much as a fag packet! :)

It's only got 120bhp, but in a car weighing a mere 830kg, it gives a healthy 145bhp/tonne, so that's in the same ball park as cars like the new Mini Cooper S, Golf V6 4Motion, Astra Turbo Coupe, Mondeo ST220, etc... so hardly underpowered.

When you start upping the boost and running 150 to 160bhp, which is easy and reliable, then we're looking at 180 to 190bhp/tonne, and that is in the same league as the Escort Cossie, Integra Type-R, Audi S4, etc, and well into Scoob territory! ;)

Remember it being tested against other hot hatches including the Pug 205 1.9 GTI and VW GTI in one of the last issues of Performance Car. Can't recall the outcome but it did not win. It's acceleration was its major forte. And it belonged to Richard Meaden's Mum and caught fire a week later.

My experiance with an R5 was on the whole a good one,nothing much went wrong untill I started going for big power(over 200bhp)
I drove it for a long time with it just being lowered and a boost controller but eventually the clutch started to slip on full boost(18psi)It that state of tune it was brilliant,quick and you would not belive the way it handled.
Problems are the build quality is ****e and now they are getting on that is going to be worse plus most have been ragged around all there life.

Had a 1986 Pearl White one for quite a few years.

Only problems i had wer a blocked radiator and a seized turbo at about 80,000, so swapped the rad for a copper-core one, and the turbo for a recon one and off i went! :)

Had great fun in mine, seemed really fast (and was) at the time, but these days it would be considered "moderately" fast, although the 0-40mph dash is quicker than most.

Recommended, if you can find an unmolested example.
