Vag, obviously your car is a 1,6l wagon MY02 not MY92 right?
I don't know if a rear diff of a WRX any model year could fit in your car without major changes, others may help you...

Vag, the drift boys here swear by mechanical diffs. Have you looked at Cusco or Kaaz 1.5/2 way diffs ?
We dont get the 1.6 here so I can't comment on your model of Impreza.

Had been looking too myself to change my rear diff. (Impreza 2.0GX my'02) but gave up when I couldn't find much info.
I'm not sure about the 1.6TS but the 2.0GX has the same final gear ratio of 3.900 as the WRX but not sure if that's enough to know whether a WRX diff will fit your car (and mine). Axles might also be a problem.
Do post back your results :-)
