Just been looking through this months car mechanics, and the service car is a ford mondeo,,

what caught my eye was the maf unit,,, it looks bloody similar
to the one in my my96!!

has anyone else seen this,,, is it a generic unit? if so do ford charge less than subaru??

There are several (3 I think) different types of MAF sensor. They all do the same basic job, but are set up to be engine type specific - so they output a sensible voltage over the range of airflows the engine expects to receive. It is unlikely the Ford one will be a straight swap, but it wouldn't be impossible - especially if you could tinker a bit with the sensor voltages and the calibration in the ECU.

Don't GM have a stake in Subary - maybe a Vauxhall part is more or less right?

Like Nissan 300ZX brakes - straight fit onto an Impreza apparently ;)

A little known thing but they are repairable... what normally goes is the heat sensing diode, the wire just carries current which is increased or decreased by the ecu and then the diode recognises the heat across the sensor and adjusts fuel accordingly.

I forgot to say the ecu adjusts the current depending on airflow and whether it's cold or warm air flowing oer it.
