Johnny50 19 December 2003 02:49 PM

Ciaran...

Take it buddy.. They're nice motors. :)

JohnnyRob 19 December 2003 07:01 PM

I'd get down there quick - thats a great buy.

planky 19 December 2003 08:38 PM

Sounds like a bargain to me.

Btw its not a limited edition,so don't fall for that salesmen spiel ;)

Olly 20 December 2003 12:16 AM

Sounds good, apart from the poxy lowering springs.

Paid £2300 for ex-girlfriends G plate oak green 16v with 86K miles and total VAG history a few months ago.

Ciaran 21 December 2003 01:42 AM

well not mates rates its just the price he was selling it for and thats that. just a bit warry that it may have been hammered for those 100k miles.

do these stand up 2 a hammering ok?

Dapster 21 December 2003 12:55 PM

I bought one a 4 yr old one in 94 with 50k on the clock and sold it 3 years later with 135k miles. In that time I went through the usual consumables (tyres, pads, disks etc) but everything else was fine - original exhaust as well but that's because they were mostly m'way miles and the car was always hot. Absolultely nothing went wrong with it.

If you look after them, they will go for ever. Must be properly serviced with frequent oil changes and top quality oil. Look for ticking camshaft noises, smoking exhausts (esp the 16v ones) and knocking front wheel bearings/worn driveshafts. Turn the wheels onto full lock and drive slowly in a circle listening to anything suspicous.

I agree with the others here - if it's unmolested then bite his arm off. The lowered suspension sounds dodgy and the oak green car was not a special edition but recognised by the purists as the one to go for. Make sure it's an original 16v and not a 8v with a new engine. There are a few ways to tell from the outside but check up the history as any VW geek will know what to change.

Ciaran 21 December 2003 01:22 PM

yes it was made as a 16v accordind to the DVLA as my mate checked it when he bought it. i get a test drive this week.

16vmarc 21 December 2003 01:34 PM

Oak green 16vs are the best mk2s!

Ciaran 21 December 2003 02:11 PM

i presume u have had one then mate?

16vmarc 21 December 2003 02:14 PM

No i just have a fondness for them! Ive only driven the 8v version.

Ciaran 21 December 2003 02:20 PM

well its going to be my first time driving one aswell and my first car if i buy it! take it that a 16v will let out a nice note on appliying full throttle?

Ciaran 22 December 2003 12:23 PM

well looks like i may be getting the golf yipee only £510 tpft in daddys name.
now what mod first?

Ian Payne 22 December 2003 02:54 PM

You will see serious benefits from a nice new performance air filter with a drilled airbox, a subtle exhaust (Miltek for example) and a rolling road tune up.

Wicked cars for the money...

Ian

bobbyh 22 December 2003 03:37 PM

my last car was a 16v oak green golf. i absolutely loved that car. standard apart from sensible drop, 17's k+n panel, and full magnex manifold system. it sounded like a motorbike round the rev range in 2nd!

very adictive to cane it for that noise though = 23m.p.g!

p.s. accoustically they are one of the best cars for ICE install's etc.

AbnormalAnimal 22 December 2003 03:46 PM

I'd be inclined to keep it completly standard, you will easily sell it for more than you bought it for if you do.
Modded ones are ten a penny, standard ones are getting rare.
:)

Johnny50 23 December 2003 08:36 AM
