My MY97 has just failed on corroded rear brake pipes. I have had it up on a ramp and have had the problem pointed out to me. Where the pipes meet the flexi bit the pipes are corroded on the "wrong side" of the joint. i.e. the main pipe bit.
Now these appear to go over the rear subframe and fuel tank as you look from underneath. Can anyone shed any light on this and how much it may cost to repair (any offers ??) What the garage told me was scary on the Labour side of things especially as Christmas is next week.

Any help appreciated.

It shouldn't be a huge amount of work. I had the pipes replaced on my Mk2 golf, and it was around £100 if I remember correctly (including pipes). Find a smaller, independant garage to quote you.

Depending on how far you are from Dundee, try Kevin Pirie opposite Matalan, they seem to be reasonably priced and do a good job.

If you do go solo, then I'll watch and make T for you if you like... Not technically/mechanically minded in the slightest unfortunately mate! :)

Cheers,
Grant

Grant if I do try it myself I will give you a call for moral support ;)

Johnny50 15 December 2003 04:27 PM

Ian..

Usually easier just to let the car in front stop you at the lights.

:D

scoobylav 15 December 2003 04:31 PM

Car in front ?? never happens mate ;)

Johnny50 15 December 2003 04:41 PM

HOw much you been quoted for the pipes ? If you dont mind me asking ?

scoobylav 15 December 2003 04:46 PM

Its the labour that is scary - The garage that did the MOT (local one) reckoned they would do it in 1 day !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
8 hours @ £30 per hour ??? + VAT + Parts. I am hoping someone else can shed some light on this and tell me it shouldn't take this long.

wee Davie 15 December 2003 05:01 PM

Ian. You should try Davie Buick in Alyth for a quote on the price he should be able to do it cheeper, and he is a good mate of mine.
