Does anyone know what the extra vent infront of the STI8 scoop does apart from let in more dust to the engine?

Are there any real driving benfits to fitting this bonnet to a normal STI8?

As with all Impreza engines they get very very hot, I assume its just for extra cooling.

It's an exit that allows air from the radiator and intercooler out of the engine bay. If you look at the cars with the bonnet up, you'll see a big carbonfibre duct that encapsulates the airflow as it exits the i/c and rad, and directs it up to the cutout.

There would be little real benefit in fitting a copycat bonnet to a standard(ish) roadcar, primarily because a roadcar's cooling system would never be asked to do as much work as the WRC's, and secondly because of the different intercooler location.

In fact, it would probably cause problems if you did run this bonnet unless you were also running an FMIC, as the turbulence caused by the air exiting through the hole would muck up the airflow into the scoop, thus reducing the efficiency of the standard intercooler.

Would probably reduce the problem of the bonnet lifting at speed though, as it would reduce the air pressure underneath it.

thanks for that useful information GM :), I did think it was designed for a specific purpose rather than for cosmetic reasons.

I've had no problems with my bonnet likely to come up in high speeds or winds although i've not seen what my car can do top end...120mph max so far ;)

so if I was to get this bonnet, I'd really need to get the mods done to make use of the design .....uuummmmm

Now I know what to do to stop my bonnet vibrating at speed - cut a bloody big hole it it;)

Lucky u can get to 120mph - mine scares the cr@p out of me well before that:eek:!

So, what purpose does the bonnet scoop on the WRC car serve?

If it serves no purpose, I wonder why they haven't removed it since they have went to the hassle of designing and incorporating a mesh vent in front of the scoop, it would have been easy to smooth the scoop at the same time surely?

The bonnet scoop on the WRC doesn't serve any purpose, it is still there because 'it wouldn't be a Scooby without a scoop' ;) but as with the WRC2003 the 'Scoop' is not Full size.

The scoop on the WRC is blocked off. It's only there for appearances.

On the WRC car, underneath the intercooler scoop is the air filter - like an oversized panelfilter.

I think that while what you say is correct for the 2000 car David, it's not the case for the Impreza WRC2003.

With the '03 car, the airbox is alongside the right wheelarch, taking air from the front of the car. The bonnet scoop isn't blocked (as it was with the '97-99 WRC's), but its main purpose now seems to be to introduce cooling airflow into the engine bay, a job the front inlets are unable to do now the rad and IC are faired into their own duct.

Greasemonkey is 100% correct, I have had a good poke round the 03 WRC engine and car. I only wish they would bring out a similar FMIC Limited Edition version, I guess that would be the end of the heatsoke story ;)

I notice that Prodrive was showing a silver STI, with what looks like an extractor in place of a scoop, at a US show. It's on p.16 of this month's 'Japanese performance'. Might be a good solution to the FMIC heat extraction issue and looks better than the big STI scoop IMO.

looks like someone's fitted the scoop unside down on that one!! that is really something different from subaru (concept I suspect). I don't think I could get use to that no matter how much time I gave it. If the bonnet ended up like that I would turn to the dark side...

so at the end of the day if it is only for comsmetics, then I should not really get the WRC bonnet then right? unless of course I get the modifications as described above by Greasemonkey?

If you don't have an FMIC I wouldn't even think about getting a bonnet like that. As mentioned further up, the hole would disrupt the airflow over the bonnet and into the scoop, reducing the efficiency of the I/C, which is the last thing you want.

Greasemonkey, I've definitely got a photo showing a large panel filter under the scoop, but it may be the 2001/2 car the more I think about it. But it was a new shape model rather than the classic 2 door models.

The 2001 car had its airbox and filter in this position, this is true, but I'm pretty sure it got its air through ducting from the front of the car rather than actually being fed by the scoop.

Think they largely avoided using it for "critical" air on the WRC's, firstly because it never worked effectively enough at the best of times, and secondly because it doesn't work properly at all with the lamp pod fitted in front of it. While the 2000 car takes some air from the scoop, most of it comes down a duct picking up from above the intercooler.

Looks like it would be totally pointless ona high street Scoob as it fits snuggly onto a carbon fibre moulding duct, extracting heat from behind the radiator.
Fit it on yours and you would soon find people nicking bits off your engine as its so large.

Nick, I can only explain this to you in simple terms:

1) you need to find a web company where you can upload the described images to the Internet (some people use photobucket i think)
2) once the image is uploaded you just click on the picture's properties then copy the property and paste this in your scoobynet reply for example [ i m g ]stibonnet.jpg[ / i m g ] but without the spaces in "[]" and "img" (see bbs code syntax)
3) hey presto ;) bob's your uncle ;)...you have your picture posted (I sound like that bloke on H&L Discovery Channel :D)
