Does anyone have any sound advice on engine steam cleaning?

i.e. Don't do it? OR proceed with caution.

Don't most alarm systems say that they shouldn't be steamed cleaned? Other than that, I guess it's 'proceed with caution'.

Noooooooooooooooooo, Don't do it. The engine is covered in a protective wax stuff.

Clean that off and your engine can get all furry on the outside. Corrosion!

I cleaned my MY98 engine with detergent, came uo clean, then started to oxidise (corrode).
I had to attempt to locally regrease it.
Have left the engine on my MY99 alone, dirty, but not corroding.
DO NOT STEAM IT.

I know someone that uses parrafin to clean their old volvo engine looks imaculate with over 150,000 on the clock, personally im a bit concerned about using a flamable liquid near my engine bay but he say cool engine apply with paintbrush and leave to evaporate no problems.

Anyone got any feelings on this?.

Yes it maty well work, but on our engines, the block is lyinhg horizontally, and has lots of little pockets, which can hold water, and would not naturally drain away.
They presumably can also hold salty water that tends to get into the engine bay, (have a look at the underside of your bonnet after doing some distance on a wet heavily salted road in traffic, like a pennine motorway).
The water may well evaporate, but the salt gets left behind in the pockets, and starts to oxidise the alloy.

Talk to Mark Underwood at WoW and he'll sell you multiclean and then the protectant. I use it on mine and they both combine to do a good job....and no corrosion.
