Does anybody have instructions on how to change a wheel bearing (NSF)? I think mine is gone :( .

Just got a price from a dealer of just shy of £100 for the parts (bearing, inner and outer seals and snap ring?). Just need to know how to chnge the buggers and if any specialist tools are required.... hopefully not?

Cheers,

Tony.

You will preferable need to use a press of some kind or another to push the inner drive hub out of the bearing, plus being able to do similar to bearing and drive hub on re installing.
It may be worth the cost and let a professional fit it, as if not fitted in "square" you can damage the bearing and will fail very quickly.
Labour operation time is normally quoted at 1.5 hrs for this, not a long job.

Cheers,

Think i'll let Prosport do it..... far too cold to be messing about with the car for the 3rd weekend in a row :(

I was just looking through the PDF Manuals I have and cannot find the wheel bearing change procedure in them..

There is talk of using an axle shaft puller to get the front drive shaft out which I presume the wheel bearing is on they appear to come out whole with the ball joint and the small stub axle that passes through the wheel assembly..

I usually find a hammer is a good wheel bearing puller and using the old bearing to guide the new one in with a hammer but never done one on the Impreza so have no idea if that will work.

Too right about it being cold..

Just looking for something else on Scoobymods and came across
this which contains the make up on the rear axle.. the wheel bearing looks do able but looks like it would be a remove and hit lots in the vice job.. this is assuming the front is similar.

What makes you think it's gone Toe?
Does it rumble when on full lock?

David_Wallis 10 December 2003 11:40 AM

wheel bearings are easy to do.. however heat helps if you struggle to get the bearing out..

pretty much as simon says.. but hammering the stub /hubby bit into the centre of the bearing isnt recommended as you may split the race in two.. I would use a big vice or a decent press (ie a big un.)

There is a noise coming from the front left.... more of a constant sort of grinding that rumble (increases with speed). Plus if you grab the wheel you can feel play in it. It was mentioned at the last MOT that there was play there, back in March  . Think the 335mm discs have just highlighted the problem more :( .

Do you have to tap / hammer the stub through the centre race after the outer race has been fitted to the carrier (not sure what else to call it)??

Cheers Simon/David for the advice. Think i'm just going to let Prosport do it (bout £180ish). Im just losing my interset in the bloody thing now.... if taking the dash out to do the matrix wasn't bad enough last weekend, fitting one of Godspeed's brake kits this weekend was about all i can take of getting dirty and cold!

Tony.

Knew i should have got the MY03 a few months back :( :(

Jolly Green Monster 10 December 2003 11:58 AM

How much are the parts??

guessing £80.. so Prosport think it will take 2.5 to 3hours?

Or are the bearings more than £80?

Simon

Tone Loc 10 December 2003 01:05 PM

Worst case is about 2.5 hours (£39.50 + vat). I have heard that it can be done in 1.5 hours if all goes well. Just have to wait and see i guess :( .

Tony.

Tone Loc 10 December 2003 01:07 PM

That's £39.50 + vat per hour not for the 2.5 hours.... wish it was tho ;) :D

okay sounds reasonable..

Took me an hour and half, maybe two to do one side on the wifes Corsa weekend before last and 30minutes to do the otherside..
First side I was taking it easy and I am no mechanic etc..

Assuming they do it fairly frequently and have all the tools to make is easier and I know the Impreza is harder to do.. but thought 2.5hours was a bit long but if that is worst case time they are quoting then sounds reasonable.

I see. Mine makes a rumbling on the NSF on full lock (right turns only) but only when cold, ie first thing in the morning when getting off the drive, and when first used after being parked for a good few hours. Was wondering if it was the bearings but I can detect no play in it.

I did notice when i drove your car to my mums a while back that you had a similar noise to me coming from the NSF but much much quieter. Kind of sounds like wind noise at first but gets worse..... maybe it's the early signs it's going? Mine clonks coming off the drive too :( :(

Just been trawling the internet and found instructions for various cars..... a lot can be done without removing the hub. Does this have to be done on the subaru? If so the geometry would have to be done would it not :(

So whats teh verdict on this then? Doable DIY?

ollyit 21 November 2010 01:50 PM

id be interested how easy it is to do on a scooby as mines quite noisy, have changed bearings many times on various boat trailers no problem, I imagine the scoobs bearing will be a lot more manly though,

HOW TO GUIDE, USEFULL

4950ken 20 December 2010 02:13 PM

I have a NS front stub axle off my old bugeye sti, which had a new bearing and hub fitted by s4u 45k before I broke the car. Quite easy to change and has the balljoint and abs sensor if anyone is interested.

When the bearing went on mine it sounded like a creaking ship, and it damaged the hub. Cost about £300 to replace along with the bearing.

ollyit 20 December 2010 03:24 PM

thanks, has anyone doen a rear bearing them selves on a classic?
