Got meself a Xbox live starter kit today and a RJ45 cable that i've plugged into a spare socket on the back of my cable modem, is it now just a simple case of plugging into my Xbox now?

Going to read the instructions of course ;) but i'm hoping I don't hve to give NTL more money and sign up for this

It's well easy I set mine up on Friday, I have Blueyonder 512k. I just plugged it into my router and popped the disk into the X-Box the followed the on screen instructions, it only took 15 mins or so. You might have to give NTL your X-box MAC address if you don’t have a router that will clone your PC’s MAC address.

Which router did you get Tim?

I’m using this 4 port Belkin router it was £45 from dabs, I’ve had it for over a year now as I have 2 PC’s using the internet connection. It clones my main PC’s MAC address so I don’t have to give blueyonder all the other MAC address’s from the second PC and the X-box. Plus I think the cable modem remembers the MAC address of you PC so you have to get it to release that address and take on the new one every time you swap the PC and X-Box over which is a pain in the ass, the router fools your cable modem into thinking that the router is your PC so you don’t keep having to faf about with releasing MAC address’s. So with the router it’s easy you just plug your X-box in and you’re away.

Just a quick question ;) is it just a case of plugging it all in and away you go? and can I use it to plug my playstation 2 into it as well?

Just in case I cant get that model will any router do it?

I think you have to buy a network adapter for the PS2, but if you have that I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. BroadbandBuyer.co.uk have a section for X-box and PlayStation 2 compatible networking gear:).

I've got the ntl connection. You can either plug the xbox directly into the cable modem, or plug a router into the modem, and plug the xbox into that. Either way works fine, and there is no setup other than plugging the cables in....

Hmm strange. Have you tried using the same cable that you use to connect your pc to the modem, (i.e. unplug it from the pc and plug it into the xbox)? Might be a problem with the cable you're using for the xbox.

Thinking about it, it sounds as though you might have a different modem to me. Mine has only one output socket on the back, (which is which I bought a router - so I can connect the xbox and pc at the same time).

Mine modem connects with a usb cable, there is a Rj45 socket on the back which I tried but the xbox cannot detect the ip adress and other things (limited Pc knowledge :rolleyes:)

Ah, if it's the same as mine, you can't use the usb and the rj45 connection at the same time. Might be the cause of your problem...

It's because the modem only has one ip address, and if you connect two devices to it (via the usb and rj45) it gets mightily confused and probably won't work with either. You need a router for that. Try disconnecting the usb connection, and I bet the xbox will start working (once you've rebotted everything).

Yep. That's what I did, and I can now have the xbox, pc, and laptop running at the same time, (I don't use the usb connection at all). Note you will need a network card in the pc for this to work however, (they're pretty cheap these days).

I *think* i've got one as there is a socket on the back of the pc that accepts the RJ45 :confused:

Sounds promising. You could try using a rj5 lead from the modem to the pc, and disconnect the usb lead. That way you could see if the card is working / set up correctly.
