Can anyone help, I drove to work this morning in my 94 WRX with no probs at all. Got in it this evening to drive home and I have got no boost and I can hear a whistle. I have just had it dynoed at P.E and I am running 1.15 bar. I hope it's not my turbo. I should add there is no smoke and i have a boost controller.
Any ideas welcome.

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago. When you are expecting the boost to come in there is absolutely nowt.

I found a small "spring washer" had come loose from the actuator arm where it joins on the turbo, check to see if that is missing and/or the arm is loose.;)

Just had a look, and the arm on the actuater seems to be all ok. I'm begining to think It mite be the turbo, or would it smoke?

No boost or only 0.5bar of boost?

If no boost at all, check actuator rod is still linked to turbo wastegate arm. If you still have the heatshield on this is trick, but can be easier if you shine a torch or lead lamp under the heatsheild and look through the grill

So actuator rod is okay.

If it's no boost at all I would be worried. You can just about read the compressor wheel of the turbo through the 90º inlet and see if it turns freel, as it could be the bearings.

If it's smoking then suspect turbo seal and bearings, if it's smoking AND chuffing then hole in piston, if it's smoking and slight rattle, possible ring land(s) gone.

Also, if you're getting 1/2 a bar of boost or so, then it could be ECU related (ECU thinks there is something wrong, dodgy sensor etc), or you have a boost solenoid/pluming issue.

Thanks for your help, I think it must be the bearings or something as theres no smoke or no misfire just no boost and one hell of a noise.

What is this noise? Where does it sound like it is coming from?

scoobyfury 06 December 2003 09:53 PM

It's a very loud whistle which sounds like it's coming from the turbo.

Are you certain all the pipework is still firmly connected and free of holes?

It seems like what I had when VF23 let go last week.No smoke or anything else.Lots of movement on shaft(when out) and no boost(noisy at first).Replace it and no probs.
With engine running (get revs up & down) try to listen turbo with a long screw driver.
Good luck

Chris
