Well.... having just watched the 2nd in the series of "Body Snatchers" it seems that the toxoplasma parasite has been linked to slower reactions and, more significantly, to those involved in car accidents!

Much as I hate to re-open that proverbial can of worms (nay parasites ;) ) again.... it looks like cats are more of a scourge than we first postulated!

:D

imlach 03 December 2003 10:32 PM

Ah, but you'll notice it also reinforced WHERE we get the parasite from - not just cats, but meat, etc. In fact, it even said 80% of French people had it....and I doubt even 1% of them got it from cats.

J4CKO 03 December 2003 10:35 PM

Thats French drving techniques explained, its because of a
Paris-ite.

I want some worms to stop me sneezing, and I could eat a big pie and justify it by saying its not for me its for me worms, cool.

ajm 03 December 2003 10:37 PM

well done imlach, I would have been disappointed had you not been first to contradict me! :)

Point is though, the parasite needs cats to complete its lifecycle - no cats, no toxoplasma and less car accidents.

So, if you ban speeding, and I ban cats we have single handedly wiped out human misery, have we not? ;)

imlach 03 December 2003 11:01 PM

No, because the toxoplasmosa exist in many animals like cattle, sheep, etc.
ie raw meat you eat.

imlach 03 December 2003 11:03 PM

The parasite lives in earth. Anything that trots around in earth etc can carry it. Cats are by no means the only carriers, and getting rid of cats would not get rid of toxplasmosa on your meat.

ajm 04 December 2003 06:39 AM

Nope sorry, us and cows etc are only intermediate hosts, it relies on cats, the "definitive host" to complete the lifecycle!

imlach 04 December 2003 07:23 AM

Sorry ajm, you are wrong :)

ajm 04 December 2003 07:27 AM

Outragous. You doubt me, but would you dare defy Google!...

Cats acquire Toxoplasma infection by eating any of the three infective stages of the parasite: cyst, oocyst, or tachyzoite. Following ingestion of cysts in infected prey (rodents or birds), the intraintestinal infection cycle begins. This cycle occurs only in members of the cat family. The organisms multiply in the wall of the small intestine and produce oocysts, which are then excreted in great numbers in the feces for two to three weeks. Within five days the shed oocysts may sporulate, becoming infectious to other animals and to humans.
Hence the parasite is not infectious to us until it has been through a cat.

Cats don't make me crash - I just go striaght over the buggers.

Hello

They didn't actually say if there was a cure for the parasite, or if it actually did any harm apart from possibly slowing down your reaction time.

Does anyone know?

Steve.

ajm 04 December 2003 08:25 AM

No known cure if I recall. No harmful physical effects, however it can cause behavioural changes!

Infected men, suggests one new study, tend to become more aggressive, scruffy, antisocial and are less attractive. Women, on the other hand, appear to exhibit the “sex kitten” effect, becoming less trustworthy, more desirable, fun- loving and possibly more promiscuous.
!!!! :D

ajm 04 December 2003 08:27 AM

also...

The research — conducted at universities in Britain, the Czech Republic and America — was sponsored by the Stanley Research Medical Institute of Maryland, a leading centre for the study of mental illness. The institute has already published research showing that people infected with the toxoplasma parasite are at greater risk of developing schizophrenia and manic depression.
All thanks to the humble moggy!

I didnt see this but we have a cat, its a home cat rarely goes out and is looked after better than me. How do you tell if the cat is infected? How do you know if you got this bug too?

STEVE.................
ps Wife definitely doesnt have it, sex kitten? If only......
perhaps I can get her infected? Promiscuous, oh yes ..........

ajm 04 December 2003 09:15 AM

You need to take a blood test to see if you have it, they look for the presence of antibodies against the protozoa. Presumably the test for the cat is similar. I think a surprisingly large % of the population does actually have it, something like 25%!

Anyone know how my wife could be best infected by my cats ? :D

BOB.T 04 December 2003 10:19 AM

what happens if you eat an under cooked cat?

ajm 04 December 2003 10:41 AM

what happens if you eat an under cooked cat?
Good question!!! I would have thought it would depend on whether or not you manage to digest the unfortunate feline before the protozoa can produce oocysts! :D

No because I am human, love cats and enjoy speeding :D :D :D

Another great cash cow for the government!!

Cats will be caught and "inspected" by the police.
According to the extent of infection with the bug, the owners will receive penalty points and a nice fine.

Blunkett will justify it in the name of road safety.
