My VF22 Failed on friday - just went psssssst with the result of no boost and the sound of a lawn mower! - it misfired very badly about 2 minutes prior to total failure - but had been misfiring on and off for a while - mostly when the engine was hot

The Turbo was sourced brand new and has only been on the car about 3 months!

The car was running about 1.4 bar held - with a bit of inbuilt overboost (maxing at about 1.5-1.6 bar temporarily)

I just had an email from BPM re the exhausts they are giving away free (to existing customers! great stuff)- I mentioned in passing about the VF22 to Greg and got the following response:

'The problem is that the Turbo is running off its compressor map. 1.4-1.6 bar
is too much..
the limit of the turbo...Basically the VF22 is rated to 340hp @15psi....
There is healthy debate in the UK as to the VF allowing 2 bar..There is no
way that is within the limits of the turbo. 2bar and the high end of
1.4 -2.0 of the spectrum is simply promoting failure'

This is quite worrying as I know that most people are running about 1.4 bar - some slightly more than this on overboost

I am currently replacing the VF22 with the original VF28 that is in mint condition (glad no onme bought it when I had it up for £250 - thats saved me about £550 and a wait!)

Can anyone comment on this - I was amazed that the turbo went do quickly - turbo was running 1.35 bar (with 0.1-0.2 bar overboost) until recent mapping

Sorry to hear about your trouble. I also wouldn't be happy if a turbo failed after 3 months.

Any idea what exactly in the turbo has failed ? I guess that will have to wait for you to get it off. I would be interested to hear which component failed as that will make it easier to deduce why.

Off to Powerstation to have it swapped on thursday - they may know as soon as it comes off?

I would be rather unamused if my turbo failed after 3 months. Surely these things are built some degree of tolerance ?
I ran mine for sometime now at various boost levels. Max'ing at 1.8bar !
The turbo didn't give any problems.

However.....

It did result in a cracked piston causing a lack of compression and much blue smoke on start-up.

Would just like to re emphasis what BPM said - the fact that it was running high boost does not necessarily mean that the turbo 'should' fail- it could have just been a bad turbo - will know soon enough

Am I correct in saying, that the garage who fitted it were not "turbo" experienced, and didn't even bother to change the oil, and oil filter. It's also highly unlikely that they primed the bearing with oil, before fitting.

I also run a VF22, and before re-mapping the Possum Link for it, took advice from someone who has the compressor map, and who I consider "knows what he's talking about". He told me upto 1.5bar was fine. "He" being Ahmed Bayoo.

If the garage neglected to prime it first, it was as good as knackered the minute you drove it.

2 bar is off the map.. and the effeciency will be waaaaaay down... but a few of us dont listen..and will fit new ones.... until we can be arsed to fit a correctly specced turbo. lol

Have it stripped.. a decent turbo place should be able to identify why it failed.. lack of oil... poor drainage... over speed..heat...etc..

If the compressor wheel has failed I would be pretty worried where all the bits are/went and what they might have done to the inside of your engine. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif Hopefully the intercooler will have trapped them .

I personally would not drive the car until I knew for sure which side had failed.
