I know its a Ford but if you get hold of a brand new UK ST220 for just over 16k would you ?
Reasons why and why not.thanks! |
nawp - because a year later it will be woth £12-£13
good cars though |
You could nearly get a new scoob for that!!

And?
|
Same power as an MY03 UK WRX, a bit heavier but less transmission losses. Fully loaded and a good chassis a good buy at 16K. Also 8 mph faster than the wrx ;)
|
isn't it a bit ironic that people are so concerned about how much cars (particularly modeos) depreciate...
... on a *subaru* bbs? btw i did just buy a mondeo. :) |
I wasn't concerned.. just making a statement..
FWIW I think it's a great car for what it is.. |
wwsd - fair enough. i am going to start my own thread on how much an H6 Outback will depreciate. I think it must be a contender for the depreciation world record. :)
out of interest, do you ever buy cars new or always s/h? |
A car that loses 30-40% of its value in 1-2 years is surely a second hand bargain?
|
The others cars I've been considering new is the St170 Focus and the TDCi I can get the ST170 at just over £12k and the TDCi at about £10.5k....they seem perhaps a better choice although I do like the Mondeo.....V6....:O)
|
i had a focus for a while and didn't like it. the handling was nice but i found the seat far too high, and the driving position not good. i have had several mondeos and liked them all. bought a TDCi the other day and it seems fine for what it is, and comfortable.
|
No. Somebody will be posting on here in a years time asking if they should buy a year old 220 for 12k and the answers will be the same.
Although it depends how you're buying it, if it's a finance job, it might be a good car to run for a couple of years, then hand back and let them handle the depreciation. But I wouldn't spend my own hard-earned on it. |
I quite like the look of ST220. At least it's quite subtle when compared to the Scoob. The bonnet scoop is now of truly ridiculous proportions.
|
still don't quite get the reasoning here.
a year old STi Type UK will have lost about 9 grand, but you shouldn't touch an ST220 in case it depreciates by 4k? If you buy a new car and sell it a year later you are almost guaranteed to loose a fair bit of money on it. IMO if you want to buy it then do. It's not supposed to be an investment is it? |
How many ST220's have been made/are on the road? This will make a big difference to the REAL value in 2-3 years time.
When it comes to selling you'll get what people want to pay. Forget book price, although dealers wont so forget part exchanging and prepare yourself for the hassle of a private sale with all the grief/risk associated. Book prices on performance cars seem to be made up by a random number generator. Auto Express seems to think the Focus RS will lost more than an ST170, yet look at people who paid £17k now struggling to get £11-12k. The RS has gone up (although obviously it WILL come down eventually). The RS is rare so will hold out better than a normal Focus, whatever the books say to the contrary. I just don't know if the ST220 is actually that rare... |
The ST220's I've seen 2nd hand have held up in price pretty well for a Mondeo, especially when compared with against the normal 2.5 ZetecS or GhiaX models.
I think if you look about you will struggle to find a good low mileage 2nd hand 220 for much less than £16k , therefore if you can get a new one it should be cheap motoring for 12/18mnths. Remember they've just had a face lift (interior and exterior) + 6speed box now std. If its an old model it might be harder to shift later on. Rgds Neil |
Neil - I thought the ST220 didn't have an external facelift, as the other mondeos had the ST220 look treatment?
I' defo go for a brand new one of £16k - and what's more I want to know where you can get them for that money! |
forget that...save £8000 and buy my w reg st200!!!
(jedi mind trick mode on) you will buy my car!!! (mode off) |
Boss, its the new ford employee discount which allows me to buy at that figure!
|
Boss
Thinking about it your probably be right, defo new interior but the exterior maybe the same on the ST, can't remember for sure as I've only had a quick look over a new model. The one I saw had the full touch screen sat nav fitted + pimp tints on top of the usual goodies At 16k for a new one I'd buy for sure. Rgds Neil |
For 16k its a bargain to me, you get a lot of car for your money.
Turkish1 |
I'm with Turkish on this one. Sounds like a lot of car for the money. You get a V6 that sounds great, leather, better build quality than a Scoob and muscular performance. :D
I'd have one over a new £16k Impreza anyday. Matt |
Dugg E4
16k for a new one, lotta car for the money. A lovely 30% off, 'WE' can't give'em away ;) Personally I'd rather spend 16K on a GTB or RSK, better built than the Impreza, and far more stealthy :D Only other advantage, is the parts discount :) Mark |
Steps to success...
1) Buy ST220 2) Fit 4WD from an X-Type 3) Ask Noble to fiddle with the engine Result = fast Mondeo :D Seriously, the Mondeo is an impressive car. Unfair to compare to a Scooby but for 16k at that spec, you can't really go wrong. |
