Demon Internet stopped passing packets over 1400 bytes for about four hours this afternoon. Nearly drove us nuts: ping & traceroute etc fine, but anything else was a waste of time. Any relevance?

Pipex have been having troubles this afternoon... Their service page says...
A major backbone link between the UK and USA is down. The backbone problem is affecting several UK ISPs, including PIPEX, and is likely to result in slow or intermittent connectivity to US sites. Routing through the UK part of the network is also likely to be affected. They're also having other network routing issues, but that's limited to pipex customers Pipex Status page here Cheers, nick. |

Both of NTL's DNS servers are knackered (again !), all packages are affected.
They've been stuffed from about 16:30 today. DNS - affecting all internet packages Due to a major server outage, ntl:home internet customers on all packages may currently be experiencing problems with ALL internet access, including web browsing, email, ftp and newsgroups. Our engineers are currently investigating and hope to resolve this issue as soon as possible. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused. Please note that due to the nature of this outage our technical support lines are much busier than normal, resulting in long wait times on all lines. If you suspect this issue affects you, please check this page or the ntlworld server status line on 0800 052 4315 for updates |

A damaged undersea transatlantic cable is being blamed for causing havoc for Net and phone users in the UK last night. A number of ISPs are understood to have been hit by the problem, which surfaced (the problem, not the cable) yesterday afternoon at around 4pm. The cable - which is owned by a consortium of telcos - is believed to have hit a snag (figuratively speaking, of course) somewhere off the French coast. France Telecom, which is responsible for that section of cable, is sending a boat out to examine the damage. At this stage it's not known exactly what the damage is or what caused it. However, the effects of the incident were felt in the UK last night. BT has confirmed that some of its voice services were hit by the outage, while NTL blamed the cable problem for downing its Net service - including web browsing, email, ftp and newsgroups - for around eight hours. The service was back up and running by around 1am today, although the cableco has conceded that some punters may still be suffering problems this morning. Telewest confirmed that its customers also experienced difficulties accessing email and personal webspace for around four hours. Although it's still investigating the matter, a spokesman acknowledged that the problems could be a result of the damaged cable. And Tiscali said it was unaffected by the incident, although some of its punters may have found accessing US-based sites slower than usual |
