when i put my intermitant wipers on the slow speed it makes a noise when it stops wiping . its like a slight buzz is this normal??

nigsy 24 November 2003 09:10 PM

mmm, funny you should say this..........I was sat in mine yesterday and it did the very same thing. If you twist it round to the other setting it doesnt make a noise.......bizarre

My accelerator pedal picked up an annoying squeak in the wet too

karps 24 November 2003 09:14 PM

it gets a bit annoying thats why i wondered if it was normal

karps 24 November 2003 10:20 PM

anyone??

Foxmod 24 November 2003 10:45 PM

Same hear mate - get used to it - it's normal :D

Gotta say chaps, mine doesnt do it. I would have thought that the buzz is a dodgy relay. These things have a tendency to chatter if the contact isnt either broken clearly, or muck has invaded.

My accelerator pedal is squeakless also.

Does the buzz seem to come from lower right hand side of the steering wheel?

jmk 25 November 2003 08:18 AM

Get same noise from wipers - bloody annoying (WRX 03).

mwp 25 November 2003 09:10 AM

normal.

sammyh 25 November 2003 09:19 AM

No noise from mine :)

peter_bailey11 25 November 2003 09:37 AM

YES! On my month old Sports Wagon I now get an electrical 'buzz' type noise (from under the extreme right of the dash) when the wipers are on slowest intermittent

If it doesn’t bother me too much I’ll report it at the 10,000 service

Little Clanger 25 November 2003 09:42 AM

Thats the relay Mr. Bailey. This doesnt mean it is gonna pack up - just annoy you (later if not sooner). Relay chatter is quite common although not pleasant on a new motor.

Gary C 25 November 2003 10:01 AM

Relay chatter will drastically reduce the life of any relay, but I can't believe the contacts are bouncing, surely.

Mine does not do it as far as I am aware, but I will have a listen

ramdor 25 November 2003 10:27 AM

Mine does it, as does me bros... duff batch of relays please sir.

Richie.

Little Clanger 25 November 2003 11:02 AM

Not always gary C. Dont wanna get into boffin mode too much but on low speed intermitent, you will get a slight buzzin noise from the coil in the relay (as you do with dimmable trannies for LV lights in yer gaff). In my experience, noisy relays are more annoying than a sign of failures to come in the near future.

On a slightly similar subject (it involves rain), has anyone got any opinions on how their STi8 handles in the rain? I took mine out in that crap weather over the weekend and lost traction at all four corners twice. Once in a straight line on the motorway (from 40mph I nailed it in third and it went garrity)and once having overtaken a car on a hill. I took the foot off the old acelerator at the top of the hill and it got well out of shape. I was told they handled better in the rain? What did you expect I hear you say! not what happened even if I did drive a little stupidly.

I think it's the tyres, my CTR had the same bridgestones are they are the worst ever in the wet.
Will change once I've worn them down, to toyos I think.

Back to the wiper thing, my sti8 has never made any such noise. Very strange.

chiark 25 November 2003 11:16 AM

Mine does too. It sounds like something squishy being electrocuted. Perhaps the wipers are hamster powered?

stiler83 25 November 2003 03:12 PM

I know this one. Mine is the same, buzzes when set on anything other than the fastest interminent wipe. Had it into the dealers and they told me they could not find anything wrong. But mine also some times stops the wipers mid sweap, they will go back down to the bottom and start backup and then just stop. Going to another dearlers on sat for 10K service and insisted they change the mechanism or do what ever they need to to sort it.

DrEvil 25 November 2003 05:33 PM

Mine does too, STi8. I was going to ask them to replace the relay next time its in for a service - well, if they agree anyhow.

Gary C 26 November 2003 10:42 AM

By relay chatter, I mean the contacts continually opening and closing. Breaking current carrying contacts always produces an arc, the size is dependant upon the current being carried. Car relays rely on the speed of opening and the size of the gap to extingush the arc (which is tiny compared to the arc we get at work when breaking 25,000 amps where the arc is drawn to specific contacts and extingused by puffer tubes), but a small amount of damage is done each time. Then their is the tiny amount of damage done by the physical impact of closing the contacts.

All this damage is cumulative but normally well within the expected number of operations in the lifetime of a relay. However, relay chatter will quickly exceed the number of operations and will eventually lead to failure. Seen it many times when cutthroat and latching circuits develop faults causing a relay to chatter. Relay chatter can also burn out coils as many industrial relays are not continuosly rated.

Mine makes the same noise, again only on the slower settings of interrmittent.
