Just a quicky,

Can you run the Import WRX classic on Optimax only, or do you have to add octane booster as well?????

NotoriousREV 23 November 2003 11:13 AM

I run mine on Optimax only (have done for 18 months) and I beleive the previous owner did as well. So far it's done over 30,000 miles in the UK without ill effects.

However, your results may vary ;)

Brun 23 November 2003 11:14 AM

You would be wise to use booster as well! Japs are used to running on 100ron - not 98.6 :)

Silverman 23 November 2003 11:15 AM

Been runing my 94 sti import on Optimax or now BP Ultimate. No probs eveything checks out ok at service. Only in real emergenceys have I put that nasty unleaded in.

Franko 23 November 2003 01:08 PM

Its best to use Opti+booster...

I sometimes just use opti and no booster but it dets if i give it some stick... its alot smoother with booster.

Just opti is ok if you drive off boost...

If its been remaped for uk fuel then just opti should be fine :)

M0NEY 23 November 2003 01:50 PM

Just optimax for me

MickeyWRX 23 November 2003 03:46 PM

PETENAUD 23 November 2003 04:17 PM

I WAS TOLD BY A IMPREZA SPECIALIST NOT TO USE OPTIMAX!

sti-spec-a 23 November 2003 04:20 PM

Optimax for me and i can run at 1.4 bar with no det on my 96 STI Also optimax for my mate He runs at 1.6 bar on gems with a standard 95 WRX

Cheers Grunt

You can run on Optimax alone, but doing so is, IMO, not a very sensible option.

As has been stated above, these cars are designed to run on fuel in excess of 100 RON, and 98.6 (or less) isn't close enough to assume you're safe. Many will det when driven hard on Opti alone, and this will eventually curtail the working life of the engine.

Speaking personally, if I was buying a car, I wouldn't touch an import unless it was either fresh off the boat, or the owner voluteered that it had either been remapped or run with booster throughout its life in the UK and also had a KnockLink fitted. Similarly, you are likely to get more for the car when you eventually sell it on to an educated buyer if you can make the same claim.

can you have car remapped to run on optimax only???

if so, how much does that cost?

calgonis 23 November 2003 10:06 PM

I have an import WRX RA, it is always run on Optimax. Everytime I fill up (at 1/4 tank fuel left) I add 1 full cap of Pro Boost - car runs great.

I dont have a knocklink, but I know others who have and have used a cap full of pro boost on normal unleaded after their knocklink lit up like a christmas tree, and its been all green after the octane booster.

I just use optimax and the local garge told me he could'nt be remapped for UK fuel. Was he talking bollocks and how do i do it?

scooby-tc 23 November 2003 10:35 PM

Yes REV i always ran the wrx on optimax and it had no problems at all.It ran as sweet when u bought it as it did when it rolled off the boat. Can i have it back :D

Franko 23 November 2003 10:39 PM

GM,
are you saying that if a car (import not been remaped) is run without booster that it could cause damage to the engine which would become more serious in the long run? i'm just assuming that is what you meant by saying you wouldn't touch one unless its been run with booster... :)

BlackWrxScooby,

You can have your car remaped, ther's a few people on this BBS who can do it for you,try the search for Remap and there should be some threads with remaping peeps mentioned :)

scooby-tc 23 November 2003 10:44 PM

There is a small chance of engine damage if its not remapped and the car is being driven hard regulaly. If u drive it sensibly with just the odd blast here and there it will run fine with no probs at all, altho i will add that if you are going to do this id invest in a knocklink just to monitor the engine for det
