Hello

How do ya work out a cars MPG???

Ive got this book that sez 20ltrs is 1 gallon??? that means the turbo cars only do about 70mls to a tank??? obviously wrong, but would like to compare mine to a uk scooby. also wanna work out running an import to see how much more they cost over a uk car.

thanks in advance

fill up, zero the trip meter, drive say 150 miles, then fill up again, make sure its to teh brim both times, then however much you fill up with the second time, say 10 gallons, and youve done 150 miles it would be 10mpg

markr1963 22 November 2003 10:41 PM

It's about 4.5 litres to the gallon not 20 ;)

How do ya work out a cars MPG???
What? You can't work this out for yourself?

Ive got this book that sez 20ltrs is 1 gallon???
No. There are 4.54 litres in a gallon.

also wanna work out running an import to see how much more they cost over a uk car.
You can't directly equate the fuel economy of a UK car with a Japanese market one, as the JDM cars are normally more powerful, and have shorter gearing, meaning higher revs on the motorway and thus poorer cruising fuel economy. You've also got to budget for the octane booster you'll need to add to each tank.

gav888 22 November 2003 10:56 PM

dont do much motorway work, but i was gonna compare normal unleaded (UK) with optimax(IMPORT), or do you have to add a extra mix to that as well.??

Mr.Cookie 22 November 2003 10:57 PM

150 miles on 10 gallons is 15 miles to the gallon ;)

T2000UK 22 November 2003 11:43 PM

I never put 'Normal Unleaded' in my UK version.

She always gets Optimax.

I usually get about 280 miles to 50 litres.
About 75% of my miles is done on the Motorway though.

StickyMicky 22 November 2003 11:56 PM

i have been driving like a old man for the past few weeks (i dont mean driving down the motorway the wrong way) for lots of reasons

ive seen my fuel bill half per week

and im getting a lot more miles to a tank (about 250)

talizman 23 November 2003 12:03 AM

lol @ stickymicky!

i dont mean driving down the motorway the wrong way

lordharding 23 November 2003 12:08 AM

another classic from sticky :D:D:D:D

Brun 23 November 2003 12:16 AM

Reset your trip counter at fill up.
Drive around as normal till you need more juice.
Lets say you have done 200 miles and to fill your car up you put in 46 litres.
Divide 46 by 4.546 to get gallons - in this case = 10.118 gallons
Now divide your milage by the gallons = 200/10.118 = 19.76mpg :)

kazlo 23 November 2003 12:25 AM

blimey.......lots of sums there, does it really matter?if it costs too much per week ,sell it .....everybody on here knows they love a drink!!!!!!!!

*Sonic* 23 November 2003 12:33 AM

I usually work out my MPG by the remainder of my wallet :)

Brun 23 November 2003 12:34 AM

:D

kazlo 23 November 2003 12:34 AM

lol at sonic

jason4656 23 November 2003 12:35 AM

bollox someone edited that! i think i can work out 10gallons to do 150miles......saying that all i know is costs me 40quid everytime i pull out the optimax pump

kazlo 23 November 2003 12:42 AM

1/4 to one on a saturday night after we won the world cup. how the hell can you do all those sums? i can hardluy see........swing low sweet scooby

gav888 23 November 2003 12:42 AM

me Bemmer is doing 150mls to £20, thats about half a tank, petrol is 73.9p per litre.

Think thats about 25PMG???

Brun 23 November 2003 12:50 AM

25.21mpg :D

gav888 23 November 2003 12:58 AM

Hmm not bad, so if i had an import, same £20 but the fuel cost is 78.9p(optimax). is it poss to work out how many miles ill get???

greasemonkey 23 November 2003 01:02 AM

Not without knowing how hard you drive your car. As a very rough guess though, if you're getting 25mpg out of your BM, you probably won't get much more than 20 out of a JDM WRX or STi. Plus, as mentioned, you'll have to add the cost of octane booster on.

Brun 23 November 2003 01:02 AM

£20 of optimax will get you 5.57 gallons as opposed to 5.95 of normal unleaded.
Import what? :)

gav888 23 November 2003 01:11 AM

do you have to have octane booster for import cars, if so, then ill stick with a uk turbo.

i dont drive hard, more of a corner man, as normally drive at rush hour times, and you always get some slow idiot in front and have to ovetake!!!!

ps what does JGM mean???

gav888 23 November 2003 01:17 AM

that should be JDM.

gav888 23 November 2003 01:18 AM

Im not pi55ed, just a little tired.!!!!

Bed time i think.

Dream of angelina jolie in a 22B with me havin fun.

StickyMicky 23 November 2003 01:25 AM

have u locked her inside or sumthing :D

BlackScoobyWRX 23 November 2003 09:28 AM

I've given up thinking about what I'm getting to the gallon, unfortunately Visa haven't !!

macka 23 November 2003 10:14 AM

yep - the combined figure Subaru quote for MPG must have been with a pensioner (or StickyMickey) driving!

I've keep trying to go steady like SM but that little devil on my shoulder keeps telling me to put my foot down - the little b@stard.

Best I've had is 28mpg but it's painfull and low 20's is my usual combined with quite a bit of motorway driving

Dark Blue Mark 23 November 2003 10:45 AM

Anyone elce got an STi4? I get about 200 miles from a tank at the mo!

Just want to compare notes!
