I have a my95 import wrx with gearbox fault. My local breaker only has a legacy gearbox and say it will fit and work no problem is this true?

Thanks in advance..

As far as I understand it, the final drive ratio is different, and the rear diff needs to be changed too? I could be wrong!

Still need more advice as i am putting the gearbox in tomorrow. If its going to mess anything up or not work i wont bother..

If all else fails, do the gearbox and the diff, because then at least you won't have any problems. =shrug= sorry, but that's my best advice.

The legacy gears are going to seem VERY tall after the shorter WRX ones. Perhaps you should give someone like API engines or Grade A subaru a call and see if they can supply you a gearbox for non-silly money. Grade-A will mostly do you a second hand one, and API will do you a reconditioned one (which I might add are fairy good, as I have one myself)

I put a 97 Legacy turbo gearbox into my my00 with no issues apart from the there only being 4 retaining bolts on the older gearboxes. I didn't notice a huge difference in gearing, but the neutral gate seemed to go on for ever :)

legacy front diff is 3.9:1 ratio, rear diff is 3.545:1 with a 1.1:1 gear in the rear of the gearbox to make up the difference.

ive fitted a uk impreza box back into my legacy with my original rear diff.

what you have to be careful of is some of the early ie 1995 wrx imports have different gearing and diff ratios.

cheers
ian :)

You cannot mix jap and UK boxes without fitting the matching rear diff, as they use different centre diffs.

If you use a UK Legacy box in a Jap spec WRX, then you will damage something.

Jap wrx would have a 4.1:1 front and rear diff.

UK Legacy would have 3.9 F and 3.54 R as already stated.

this has fried my brain why are the front and rear diffs different!

my leggy does have a label saying 3.545 on rear diff but why would the front be different?

UkLegacyT 21 November 2003 03:58 PM

dont know why they do it like that mate, found it strange myself

thats why they have a 1.1:1 reducer gear in the box to make up for the difference in diff ratios. the reducer gear is to the rear of the centre diff, reducing the speed of the shaft going to the rear diff to allow for the higher diff ratio.

ie 3.545 x 1.1 = 3.9 (or 3.8995 but close enough).

does that mean that in theory the impreza box will be lighter as it doesn,t have the reduction gears?

B16BUG 21 November 2003 06:43 PM

Breaker sent out a non turbo legacy gearbox which is cable based.
Spoke to extremscoobys who will be getting my box recond.
Thanks for replys.

pugoetru 21 November 2003 06:49 PM

bet they told you it was for a turbo though/charged turbo price :D

UkLegacyT 21 November 2003 07:05 PM

i dont think there will be anything in it weight wise really, we are only talking a few cogs.
a uk impreza box is the same as the legacy box. its just the import ones with other diff ratios that dont have the reducer gear.
