Hello all

I currently own a MY93 WRX with quite a few mods, HKS Intake, FMIC, HKS EVC PRO, de-cat,3" bore, UK 7D ECU..

I have been told that my car has definately got a P1 Turbo fitted.

Now not knowing much about turbos, Could some informed chaps please inform me what effect this turbo has on my car.

I.E better spool up, less power etc etc..

If I was looking to get a new turbo on this car when this one goes flop, What would I be looking at, would this mean more BHP/TORQUE over P1 turbo. and if so why? Does a bigger turbo mean more power at same boost levels????

Any detailed info will be so so helpful

Cheers

Rob

A P1 Turbo I believe is the VF28 that is fitted to at least the sti5 as well

Spool up is pretty good on this Turbo as its quite small. Peal power is about 350bhp and about 320lbs torque

You could put on a bigger turbo but this would give you more lag - you'd get more power but there is always a trade off on spool up at a given level.

You'd need to sort out the fuelling on your car - A fuel pressure regulator, Walbro fuel pump and ideally bigger injectors if you were looking for large gains

Drop me a mail and I'll tell help you out. Nezz (Neil) also posts on this website - is informative and lives in Gloucester........ - the Southwest contingent are a friendly bunch - excluding the arrogant ones that turn up at the Star pub from time to time and dont speak to lowly cyclists that pob by for a chat......!!!

cheers Fangoria

my current mods are

HKS power flow intake (new filter recently fitted)
HKS FMICooler
HKS EVC PRO boost unit
HKS boost gauge (on dash)
Decatted with 3inch downpipe and system
P1 Turbo
FCD Device
7D UK ECU
HKS SSQV Dump Valve
Recently fitted New FSE fuel pump and new fuel filter
Not sure what Injectors are fitted

Going to be rolling roaded on thursday and checked over.
when first got it 3 weeks ago was running a bit weak at high rpm/load... hopefully new fuel pump will correct this (origional 93 pump was fitted) and the intake hose was crap, so fitted a new SFS intake hose...

What i would like to understand about turbos is:

If I say had a P1 turbo which is smaller than normal it spools up quicker Ok I get that, but whats the diffo between my P1 runn at 1.1bar and a bigger turbo run at 1.1 bar too. Or if you run a bigger turbo do you just run a higher boost (obviously allowing for extra fuel/air intake etc)

Feel free to give me a comprehensive answer :)

Cheers again

Rob

So I assume your inlet path has been converted to 'front entry' then? From the factory I guess your car came with a 90 degree elbowed td05...which is, once converted for front entry (and arguably even without), better than the vf series.

Check your compressor cover for straight or 90 degree entry.

Pictures of my turbo can be found here

Have a look and let me know your opinions

Turbo has IHI RHF5 on it if you look closely..

Bit more looking into turbo looks like it could be a IHI RHF5 turbo... poss a vf22???

Here's some links for info on it, how does this compare to what would of been fitted as standard, what would that urbo of been in no's etc.

lots of info would be great

IHI is the manufacturer
RHF5 is the series of turbo
VF28 is the model if it's from a P1

Why will the turbo go pop?

A bigger turbo will mean more lag, and yes as you summise, more power at the same boost level.
