Well? Opening credits there was the blobeye in all it's stickered up glory, going for the sideways world record. Didn't watch the prog as looked a bit tedious but what is Simons connection with these 'terrorists'? Should I terminate my scoobynet account? It's against the banks T&C's that I should fraternise with terrorists!

Not sure whta you're on about Chuck, presumably a TV prog last night with SDB on it to illustrate the hooligan nature that Subaru owners have? or something else?

F
PS this is not a dig at SDB in anyway, OK?

Old_Fart 18 November 2003 08:06 AM

oops I should've put some extra ;) ;) 'ies in, don't really think it had anything to do with Impreza's or scoobynet.
There was a 'documentary' last night about folk going around destroying speed camera's. For some reason the opening credits featured Simon's blob-eye. Was the worst kind of sensationalist TV so I only managed to watch 10 mins or so.

Hi

Can someone please give me an absolutely cold and honest appraisal of whether this showed the world record attempt as being associated with or similar to the terrorist element of the program?

I didn't see it myself but would be very irritated if it turns out that they have tarnished something so many people put so much effort into, and gave so much money to charity over.

If anyone has details of who to contact, or at least the name of the program and time / channel that would be great also.

Many thanks

Simon

Apparently they also mentioned the incident in the hotel room with the goats :D

There's a video of the program available on the site. (Need nasty Real Player, though)

EvilBevel 18 November 2003 10:42 AM

Deffo footage of the record attempt

ALi-B 18 November 2003 10:45 AM

Watching it now (i'm one of the fools who installed Real player ;)) So expect my views very soon :D

ozzy 18 November 2003 10:48 AM

I never linked the two myself and to be honest you'd need to be a muppet or completely thick to think they were related in any way.

I would add though that the whole program was about speeding - either destroying cameras or nutters on bikes. You could argue that your footage in no way condoned any act of speeding or reckless driving. I watching it again to see just how much of the footage is actually shown.

Although, I'm sure the reporter said they had footage of a Police chase where the terrorist goaded them by power-sliding his way around a roundabout for 2hrs ;)

Thanks for the enlightenment Puff - I probably should have worked that out!!
Just watched the programme and only noticed a split second of said car at the start of the programme and it wasn't even a full screen shot but montaged with lots of other stuff. Only had it through real player and the quality was cr*p.
Have to say that the cop car chasing the bikes looked OK though - where can I get those alternately flashing brake lights from? :D

stevem2k 18 November 2003 11:05 AM

Just by the inclusion of the images within the programme it could be implied that the record was some advocation or implicit approval of speeding and/or irresponsible driving.
Surely there must be some copyright issues as well ??

Steve

EvilBevel 18 November 2003 11:23 AM

If I'm not mistaken, one of the other "inserts" in the trailer was from the Sideways Challenge (the red M3, probably Tiff spinning it :) )

It's not bad enough to lose sleep over IMHO, it's just "ooh, let's do some footage of fast cars", but it does certainly warrant a stroppy email to the makers, as yes, why show footage at all if it supposedly has nothing to do with the subject ?

As an aside, what a piece of journalistic trash

ALi-B 18 November 2003 11:25 AM

OK, did see the famous scoob for about 2 seconds, barely - as the quality is crap. But I wouldn't want a car that is asscociated with me being used on that program without my permission (IMO;))!

As for the rest....well, it was presented with a very narrow-minded fasion, and totally dis-regaurded many other factors that are the REAL cause of accidents!

Not once I saw mentioned that BAD DRIVING standards are the main infulencing factor in the cause of accidents OK speeding is part of that, but as admitted by the report, deaths have not been reduced...why? It's bad driving that what's causing it! You can very easily have an accident at or below the speed limit that can cause death.

The amount of poor driving I have seen on the roads confirms my suspicions, and through lack of proper enforcement it's on a massive increase. Also the program fails to acknowldge the ability of a driver to avoid accidents, by being capebale of controlling a vehicle in a emergancy situation - And I am willing to bet that a large proportion (well over 50%) of the driving population cannot control a vehicle correctly in an emergency. IMO that is the true cause of deaths - not speeding.

MadMark 18 November 2003 12:10 PM

Seemed a bit one sided to me - "Speed Kills" - End of discission - NOT!!

The police were claiming that cameras were only used in Accident Black spots - or residential / urban areas!!!!

Nothing to do with people doing silly things?

Even the spokesman from MAD got a bit tongue tied .....

Bikers got the biggest pasting though!

jason77 18 November 2003 12:22 PM

the biker on the white line with the car comign the other way must had a sore shoulder (wing mirror)

i well thought that biker was gonna head on into that lorry too.

v one sided tho... speed causes all accident apparently

...and cameras are not money earners at all  a lot of them ain't and serve a proper cause.. but most a bollox and are purely for revenue.

Chris L 18 November 2003 12:26 PM

To save me looking through the whole half hour prgram - where's the Scoob?

Chris

timmy03 18 November 2003 12:27 PM

anyone know if this is gonna be repeated just sometime they use bbc 3/4 to repeat stuff, they might not, just wondered

Josh L 18 November 2003 12:27 PM

The montage pix of SDB and other cars was overdubbed with the words 'cars are getting faster, our lives are getting faster, and some people won't let anything get in their way' finishing with a Porche on a public road.

IMHO, the shots were used in such a way as to imply they were all on public roads, and were examples of fast or reckless driving.

Quite apart from the fact that almost all shots were probably used out of context, if I were in SDB's shoes I'd be seriously hacked off, as his was the only one readily identifiable.

Josh

NotoriousREV 18 November 2003 12:39 PM

I think it's time that car enthusiasts start to lobby the media with a view to presenting a more balanced view i.e. let's start telling the truth: bad driving kills and speed cameras can't cure that. And let's have this message spread via mainstream (not motoring) magazine programs.

EvilBevel 18 November 2003 12:49 PM

Chris, in the first 3 minutes of the Realplayer vid.
