Just been ringing around the specialist scooby garages today,And found out,Mafs have diffrent "Values" for each application....
The mafs have diffrent part numbers,and diffrent coloured labels.
Uk Mafs cannot be substituted for import mafs and vise-versa,Each maf`s have a diffrent resistor fitted in them,And each sends its own "Values" to the ecu,And like for like is recommended,No doubt the car would run with a alien maf fitted....But to what effect...?.
No doubt the tuning guys will be in their eliment,Experimenting with these sensors...
But as stated...I was told,To obtain the correct maf ..for the correct application....Just a thought lads...Kev.

How do you know which MAF you have got. Does it go on the model/year etc..?

i bodged a uk maf on mine and had a tight fit on the inlet pipe, started it up and it idled like a bag of hammers
i gave it a few revs and took it stright off

it wasnt happy at all
and yes they have diffrent colours and sizes, i posted the pics a while back ;)

Knackers! so that means my spare UK Turbo MAF sensor will be no good on a P1?????

TYPE-R,.....Its mainly the part numbers...In that is the "value`s" also, On mine the part no was--22680-AA160,I believe the "value" Was the AA160 bit,
ABBYLAD....No the UK maf is diffrent to the JDM ones,Apparently,The uk`s have a diffrent again resistors inside,And can only be fitted to the UK speck cars...This is the senario i was in....I was offered a UK maf for my WRX STI Type RA,And there was a deffinate answer "NO" to that one....I was advised to make sure i changed Like..For..Like....And thay are getting snapped up at 3-4 per week,At one subaru specialist i was in contact with.....There are also diffrent values again ...In the coloured labels...OR as i was led to believe....Kev.

Picked up new MAF today and i was told by parts guy at dealers "MAF sensor is the same on all subarus mate" when i'm bout to fit it its completely different! so gona go see him tomorow again...

Was getting my car tuned and it blew 2 uk P1 Mafs in the space of 6 Mins!

Now running MAF and housing off Nissan 300zx.

More stronger

But smaller housing(Had to be sleeved down.)

No problems up to now.

ECU mapped accordingly.

It must have the similar values to your own maf....I seem to recall you can do some alterations to the ecu by changing the diffrent values...BUT you must be experianced in this feild.
Lets be honest guys.....These engines soon complain if it does`nt like something...Sometimes with costly outcomes....I thought i had better inform you guys,To try and help you guys keep your engines..The garages that informed me..Are top notch scooby motorsport garages....I know i`ll be sticking to the exact part numbers on mine anyway...Just a thought ....Kev.

also i wouldnt pay to much atention so to dozy bloke behind a counter, hell i even got loads of advice from "respectable" people on this board which was "wrong as fook"

take the advice from people who have actualy done a job, not just been told about it.

its pretty plain to see that the above 2 mafs are diffrent, the colouring sticker on them is diffrent and the part numbers, also the design of the actualy unit isnide is diffrent (but simmiler) they are nboth taken from the same phase/my year, the diffrence being ones a uk maf and the other is a 276bhp wrx.

also the intercoolers are diffrent as well ;) (although they look simmiler)
the 276bhp wrx comes with the sti intercooler abliet painted black instead of its natural silver, i have also compared with the same uk cars as my above experiment ;)

I think the STi 5/6/P1 and UK 99/00 MAF sensors and housings are the same, but I am not certain.

Sorry ABBYLAD....When i enquired,The guys in the know,Told me,That the UK Mafs were diffrent than the JDM mafs...ALL UK`s having the resistors for the uk market/uk ECU`s,And not compatable to the jap speck ecu`s....And if the wrong one is fitted....Could make the car run far too lean....Causing a naughty bang.....
I`m sure i have read somewhere,About,The rally guys,(with all the testing gear)Customizing,The rally cars...With a series of mafs and ecu re-programming eta.....i`ll stay on (hopefully) the safe side..Myself.

ABBYLAD,So "no" I would`nt try the uk maf for the PI,You could always check on the side label,Both the colour and the part numbers of both....i`m lead to believe the resistor in mine is AA160...Which is shown just after the part number on the side label.....Kev.

I tried a uk MAF today in my import STI and it didn't like it whent mad reving up n down... so its got to be a different MAF for different cars although my dealer insisted all mafs are the same :rolleyes: talked to a different person this time and he seemed more clued up so waiting for new MAF for monday now...

Anyone compared 99/00? The housing is the same size anyway, and the voltages you get at idle and say at about 300 BHP are about the same as a UK.

I don't think the difference you see is due to JDM vs Euro, but more like year/model. Up to 97 the MAFs are 78mm or so diameter. 99/00 are more like 90mm, for both UK and JDM, Sti or otherwise.

I think the larger MAF you have there is something in between. Because the early mafs which are all small can certainly be interchanged.

I would be interested to get one of those larger mafs though, even it was just a knackered one.

ANyone have a larger dead MAF from a phase 1 car they want to sell?

both with coil block in the center of the engine ;)
same year, same facelifted front end with the 3 bar front bumper, 2 uk cars and my jdm one as a comparison

maybe the bigger maf was 1st introduced in the 97onwards wrx`s as they ran a much bigger power gain and were slowley phasd into the rest of the range??

who knows
all i know is 2 of my mates same year uk cars have a small one and mine has a large one :D

i have yet another mate with a uk car of the same year, but i havent managed to catch up with him yet to check ;)

STi5/6 and UK 99/00 MAF sensors definitely the same. Never seen a P1 one, but presume it also common part, being based on STi5 and all... :)

I've seen all sorts of stuff with subaru's now, 97 cars with newer engine layout, butnot facelift bodywork, I have a phase 2 engine block with a phase 1 crank in it too.

It wouldn't surprise me about the MAF, but I do'n think it was neccesarily for power reasons, as I am sure I have seen some stis with the smaller MAF.

Either way, I would be very interested to get hold of a MAF like that. I was thinking of making a larger housing and fitting the sensor from the smaller MAF into it (they do come out).

MY99 and MY00 cars both Eurospec and JDM all use the same maf, there are, in addition three further versions for the earlier cars. There are no "different resistors" as mentioned, MY92-96 is one, and then two types for MY97-98 of differing barrel diameter.

Depends on what year, in 1996 that would have been quite possible, I could quote the part numbers, don't forget that a model year is not a calender year.
