Recently one of my Legacy Turbo tappets has been annoyingly noisy now and again. i knew it was in the right hand side head, and suspected it was just the one.

anyway, due to swapping over the bottom end and other stuff on the car i removed the engine the other day. after removal of the heads, i checked out the r/hand side one.

i checked all the tappets/lash adjusters for excess movement. all were fine with only a couple of mm movement.

However....pulled on one and it came straight out...??? looks like the circlip that holds the adjuster in its bore has dissappeared!

i am assuming this is likely to be the cause of the noise, as all the other adjusters are silent.

question is, how do i get the outer section of the adjuster out of the bore in the head, as it doesnt seem to want to move and i cant grip it with anything?
i was thinking of putting the centre piece back in and borrowing a circlip off another adjuster so that i could grip the ball head with something to remove the whole adjuster....but i dont want to break a circlip and have to buy another adjuster.

any ideas?

thanks
ian :)

Can you replace part of the shim, and make it solid?

dont have access to any heat source at the moment, but could get something.
i have my mig welder here, what material is the tappet made from? is it mild/chromed/stainless etc?

suppose it could be made solid, but was looking for a qucik fix really as the car is going asap.

what do these tappets consist of? the only part i have slid out is the small 'skittle' shapped piece, will the outer part remaining in the head. is there a ball bearing too? any other parts?

There are 3 or 4 parts as far sa I can remember.
The main body, which is stuck, a spring inside this, then I think the ballstud.
There may be another bit under the ballstud, I cant quite remember

They are a fiddly wee bastid. Would some form of stud/screw extractor fit inside the body of the lifter to grip it??

thanks steve, will check the other part(s) is/are in there too.

i think what i'll do is go to subaru first thing tomorrow and check they can get one within a few days, then i'll have to get the body out one way or another.

do you think just replacing the circlip may cure it? ive checked the ballstud visually and it seems fine with no wear marks etc.
trouble is do subaru sell just the circlip or rob you for a new adjuster assembly

will post how i get on
cheers, ian :)

not going to bother removing the outer part, will leave it as it is. managed to order just the circlip from subaru this morning, so hopefully that will sort it :)

cheers, ian.
